The Brexit Party is not what people think it is. Some people think it is UKIP 2.0, others think it is going to be the start of some new political revolution. It isn't. It's not a party, its Nigel Farage's personal fan club. In this thread we will attempt to explain. 1.

1/ If the UK rejoins EFTA the population of the bloc swells from approx 14 million to over 80 million. It gains a permanent member of the UN Security council, the fifth largest economy in the world and the world's most important financial centre.

How ridiculous. EU in its modern form didn't come into existence till ~1993. The peace was kept by NATO, the UN and Council of Europe providing talking spaces and dialogues open and indeed the memory of the horrors of WW2. There are arguments against brexit but this isn't it.

Over 70 years of peace brought to you by European nations working together, by the EU. That’s what we’re turning our back on. Still, on the plus side: blue passports. #DDay75

We are delighted to see this from @Tobias_Ellwood today. The “Norway option” (or Icelandic or Swiss option) are the best, most workable & most durable approaches for 🇬🇧 to thrive outside the EU.

The UK has moved into formal negotiations with Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland on ambitious future relationships after months of close working between our countries. Looking forward to building partnerships to strengthen the excellent cooperation we already share.

Some want to rejoin but don’t see it happening in any relevant timescale Others emphatically don’t want to rejoin but DO want to cooperate economically & in other ways The key is to focus on what unites those 2 groups & let the extremes talk to themselves while we get on with it

Australia has trade agreements with multiple partners. If the UK leaves with no deal it will have the most basic WTO trade terms with the whole world.... Like Afghanistan. From "oven ready deal" to the Afghanistan option in one year. 😡

Q: Are you walking away from the talks? A: "As far as I can see they have abandoned the idea of a free trade deal. There doesn't seem to be any progress. So what we're saying is come here, come to us. But unless there's a fundamantal change of approach we should go for Australia"

It's been said before, ( by @K_Niemietz we think) but keeping the customs union and ditching single market is like throwing away a burger and eating the box it came in. But what about free movement you say? There are sensible ways to resolve that:

16. The Brexit Party is simply a vehicle for NF to reward his friends and raise his own profile. He has no knowledge or ideas about Brexit and won't have the power to implement it even if re-elected. Thanks for reading. /End

So, to clarify, rather than align on regulations HMG decides its better to wave 🇪🇺 imports through but not get reciprocal treatment for 🇬🇧 exports. Boom time for 🇪🇺 exporters! #BetterinEFTA

The funny thing is there were two 'pro brexit' judge rulings in last week or so, and hard Brexiters were silent. Today it's full 'enemies of the people' mode.

Imagine being able to massively reduce barriers to trade with a huge export market of 500m consumers just next door while ALSO having an independent trade policy, enabling deals with India, New Zealand, Australia….. If only there were such a way…. #EFTA4UK 🇬🇧🇨🇭🇳🇴🇱🇮🇮🇸
