Dear young athletes- keep this photo saved to your phone and show the next person who says you have to focus on one sport in HS. The amount of kids I’ve heard say “I can’t risk getting hurt” or “my coach won’t let me” drives me crazy. You get one shot to be a HS athlete.

Not winning anything if he’s your best player.
Ja Morant when asked questions from the media: “Go ask the coaching staff.” And then asked what could have been done differently, other than asking the coaching staff: “According to them, probably don’t play me.” (🎥 @50NuancesDeNBA)

Not sure how others feel about MSHSL state football playoff seeds. I get the purpose but is strength of schedule looked at or just record? In AA south you might have the 2 best teams (JCC and Cal) playing right away. Stick WEM in Section 1 and they don’t get a home game.

Parents; cheer for the TEAM. Not just your kid. When you do that, you highlight your selfishness. And it’s so gross. Thanks, from a coach that mistakenly sat in the parents section.

A reminder for youth basketball coaches starting their season: Stop wasting so much time putting in set plays - most of them don’t work anyway. Teach your players how to space the floor and recognize opportunities to create advantages. That’s what actually translates to

Coaches have “favorites.” But it’s not politics: it’s trust, effort, and impact. Be the player who can be trusted, makes the right plays, works hard, stays committed, and lifts the team. Talent matters, but trust + commitment = playing time.

Winning tournaments feels exciting, but it doesn’t always mean players are developing. In fact, chasing wins at the youth level can sometimes get in the way of long-term growth. Here are some thoughts from two years of observing the youth space. A thread. 🧵

The people who succeed aren’t the ones who avoid failure - they’re the ones who learn how to respond to failure with optimism. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and improve.

Good reminder for players and coaches from @CoachUrbanMeyer with fall sports starting Monday: You will play like you practice. You can’t practice on autopilot and play with purpose. How you compete in practice will determine how you compete in games.
