@NationalTheatre @michaelsheen The NHS's founding principles (universality, mutuality, providing care free at the point of use, based on need not ability to pay) are of enduring value & must be promoted & defended. @michaelsheen conveyed that message with passion. Contemporary resonances & relevance indeed.

I too was at @NationalTheatre last night to see Tim Price's Nye. Powerful performance by the peerless @michaelsheen, showing Bevan' visionary will, determination & audacity to make political change happen & create the NHS.
Just watched Nye at @NationalTheatre with Michael Sheen. So much of the play and politics of the time still resonate today. Sheen is brilliant and gives a moving performance typical of an actor of his calibe, But the brilliant writing also sllows the rest of the cast to shine

Wes Streeting needs to identify & commit to a clear pathway to improving & restoring pay, or doctors will leave medicine or leave the UK, undermining the NHS & patient care. It's in the public interest & best for patients to find a constructive settlement. @BMAResidents @TheBMA.
Tomorrow, we meet with @wesstreeting . All we're asking for is a clear path to #PayRestoration. Industrial action is our last resort. There's still time for the Government to do what's right and avert these strikes before it's too late.

Accomplished @ERunswickBMA interview on @BBCr4today, setting out case for additional pay for resident doctors. Wes Streeting needs to identify & commit to a clear pathway to improving & restoring pay, or drs will leave medicine or leave the UK, undermining the NHS & patient care.
Superb interview on @BBCr4today with @ERunswickBMA. Authoritative reasonable explanation of the need for resident doctors’ pay restoration. The ball’s in your court @wesstreeting. @BMAResidents

Well done @ERunswickBMA on @BBCr4today - clear explanation as to why resident doctors need pay restoration . Despite @bbcnickrobinson constantly interrupting and not letting you finish a single sentence . Resident doctors deserve pay restoration to 2008 levels at the very least

I was proud to speak at this event on behalf of @TheBMA, with @MSF_uk/@DOTW_UK/@HI_UK/@MedicalAidPal representatives, calling on UK & other Govts to uphold international humanitarian law, defend medical neutrality & impartiality, & prevent Israeli attacks on healthcare in Gaza.
For this week only, we have joined organisations in the Red Line for Gaza Campaign to call for an immediate end to attacks on healthcare in Gaza. There will be a demonstration at Parliament Square, London, on 10 July at 10.30am - please wear red. @oxfamgb.

On the 30th anniversary of the appalling Srebrenica genocide, we must indeed 'Remember Yesterday, Act Today'. In the Srebrenica Prayer's words, we must strive 'That Srebrenica Never happens again To no one and nowhere.' Yet genocides are still occurring elsewhere in the world.
Today marks 30 years since the Srebrenica genocide, when 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were murdered for their identity. We remember the victims, honour survivors, and commit to stand against hatred, denial & division. #Srebrenica30.Read our full statement:

It's right that NDAs should no longer be used to conceal institutional, organisational & individual misconduct & to silence victims of bullying, harassment & discrimination. Their abolition will make workplaces fairer & safer. We shd commend those who have worked to achieve this.
Victims and witnesses of harassment and discrimination have been silenced for too long. This Labour government will stamp it out. Credit to @cbmsilence and @LouHaigh for leading the charge.

Patient safety is the touchstone for judging future arrangements for PAs/AAs. Scope of practice must be appropriate & set nationally. Standards have dropped with the deprofessionalisation & taskification of medicine & doctor substitution. The Leng report must address these issues.
The Leng report is unlikely to be the final chapter in the story of PAs/AAs in the UK. Serial irresponsibility by multiple actors has left us w/ a complex, difficult situation, incl for the PAs/AAs themselves. Unpicking it will take a while; pt safety has to be the guiding light.

It is certainly essential for the Government to work collaboratively & cooperatively with those who provide patient care. It is also important to resist deprofessionalisation, taskification & dumbed-down training within the NHS, & recognise the value of holistic generalist care.
If the Government wants the 10 Year Health Plan to be as transformative as it would have everyone believe, then it needs to implement it hand-in-hand with those providing care to patients on the frontline every day. Read our high-level summary here:.

Today we remember the terrible events of 7/7, united in grief at the senseless loss of life & the life-changing injuries that resulted from the bombings. We should also feel great pride in the selfless & courageous response of the emergency services, including @theBMA doctors.
Today marks 20 years since the 7/7 bombings struck London. On that day, 52 people were killed, with many more injured. We remember all those who lost their lives and were – and continue to be – impacted by the events of that day.

It is concerning to see legislation used to proscribe a political protest movement as terrorist. Such a policy risks having a chilling effect on political protest & advocacy. Palestine Action's protests are not intended to kill or cause serious injury.
UN experts concerned at unjustified labelling of political protest movement Palestine Action as ‘terrorist’, recalling that acts of protest that damage property, but are not intended to kill or injure people, should not be treated as terrorism.

Mass killings have occurred at the distribution sites - 'slaughter masquerading as aid', as @MSF has said. There are far too few distribution sites. The initiative both risks giving cover to Israel to depopulate parts of Gaza, & risks complicity in humanitarian crimes.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation does not adhere to core humanitarian standards & principles. USA, Israel & GHF are politicising aid distribution. The initiative lacks impartiality & neutrality, is turning food into a weapon of war, is denying access to fuel, & uses mercenaries.
🚨BREAKING: Oxfam and over 130 organizations demand an immediate end to Israel's deadly distribution scheme, a return to UN-led coordination, and the lifting of the brutal blockade on Gaza. Read our joint statement 👉

Entertaining, erudite, amusing Jamie Hayes lecture for @TheArtsSociety_ Beckenham, attempting the almost impossible: compressing A History of Opera into an hour's talk. Many musical examples as we began with Peri & heard Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner & Puccini.
