About 170,000 UK children are exposed to clinically significant levels of lead. Only about 250 of them will receive any intervention to reduce that exposure. Six MPs and a Lord have signed an open letter suggesting we change that:

If you want to keep your children safe online, teach them about cybersecurity, which has many aspects. One of them is the importance of using a VPN, which every teen should do. It's a human rights issue and also a practical thing to do. 1/

PSA because I've been seeing this a lot in Twitter profiles, but this is a *Russian* Orthodox cross:☦️ Calling it the Orthodox cross is Greek Orthodox cross erasure.😠

The IFS obsession always seemed weird to me. It seemed obvious to me it would invite Dissociative Identity Disorder, and I just googled it and found out it DID. https://t.co/zhpjlvwvv3

TPOT as a culture is starting to crumble. The autistic anxious animal alts are now employed. The people telling you "do IFS" are on year 2 of having regulated their inner gifted child. The tweets yearning for a bf/gf are nowhere to be found. The "me and who" crowd is on...

*sigh* https://t.co/mmIvSxy8eU confidently incorrectly declaring downloading scans of medieval manuscripts is "theft" despite the fact that they're public domain in the UK - as clarified in a 2023 supreme court decision. https://t.co/kagVozDQUk

I will respectfully disagree with Claire, and say that your Number One job as a parent is (unfortunately) significantly harder than banning video games or banning anything else. Your mission is to: carefully and increasingly expose them to the online world, which will

Another thing not mentioned in this very good defence of the birth dose for Hep B is simply endemicity. The UK has lower Hep B rates than the US, so a birth dose is simply less cost effective here than it is in the US. (Though I would support a birth dose here as well!)

@DistractedAnna I think @RuxandraTeslo makes a fairly good argument in favour of universal birth doses here. https://t.co/8E3X02FmU0 (I'd also add there's a lag between antibody formation and infection, so false negatives can indeed occur!)

You know how everyone is freaking about how bad new immigrants are for public finances? I did the math and: even considering only new Boriswave immigrants, the average new immigrant salary was still higher than the average British national. On Substack:

If you think you would jump in anyway, get some lifeguard training. It is really difficult, even if you're a strong swimmer, most people who haven't had this training have *no idea.* Advocating people jump into rivers with no caveats is irresponsible.

The original thought experiment was *very careful* about the fact this water is only waist height and you are only ruining an expensive suit. The reality is potential rescuers become victims every year and if you are dead that will in fact harm your family.

"If you see a stranger drowning, you can jump in and save them, with no effect on whether you're also kind to your friends and family" Yikes. Actually, pretty much every rescue body, Red Cross, RNLI, the US Army specifically says DO NOT ENTER THE WATER.

@pmarca Hi Marc. I know the heatmap meme, but I think the study it comes from ( https://t.co/rqK2vSX7EU ) is saying something really interestingly different from the meme version. The study finds (see Figure 1) that liberals care about their friends more than conservatives do*.
