people in atlanta did literally everything in their power to stop cop city the "right" way. countless hours spent canvassing, testifying at public meetings, calling in to public comment, liaising w elected officials, sending open records requests, etc. they were summarily ignored

This wonderful infographic summarizes two of my Ph.D. thesis chapters studying Lincoln's Sparrow responses to chronic industrial noise. Happy to share the article recently published in @IBIS_journal by email. @FrontEcolEvol article is open access.

Tomorrow night, a fleet of 500 drones will "take over" NYC's skyline, shining a massive ad for Candy Crush down on the city. It's part of a new marketing effort aimed at "turning the sky into the largest screen on the planet."

As Joro Spiders continue to spread in the southeast, they are now the most commonly encountered spider in much of the Atlanta metro. I designed an R Shiny app to visualize their distribution. It pulls data from @inaturalist: https://t.co/j6LMRFisow

If there's one feature you should read from @sciam's October issue, it's this gorgeous, rigorously reported story by @josh_sokol about the latest research on the devastating ecological effects of light pollution. The sky needs its 'Silent Spring' moment. https://t.co/83NPBbCevJ

Compare the native Sawyer beetle (left) to the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (right), both photographed at Hubbard Brook by @DeitschJohn. Unlike native wood-boring beetles, EAB feeds on healthy trees. New research at Hubbard Brook is looking at forest-wide effects of EAB.

🚨Here's The Atlantic's new cover story, adapted from my new book, An Immense World. By flooding the world with light & sound--sensory pollution--we've confounded, routed, and harmed other animals. But we can still save the quiet & preserve the dark. 1/ https://t.co/aqdnCR7Wrj

Every creature lives within its own sensory bubble, but only humans have the capacity to appreciate the experiences of other species. What we’ve learned is astounding.

There’s a massive story unfolding in Atlanta, but it’s barely getting any media attention. Right now the city’s forest, a vital site for humans and animals alike, is under attack, and some amazing people are fighting back. Here’s the story. 🧵

Thrilled to announce my first research paper! Borne from a class project in @JohnLosey12's Insect Conservation Biology class, we investigate sales of arthropods of conservation concern & discuss current regulations of insects used for services. In GECCO. https://t.co/3xkmc09BD0

A stunning yellow spotted isopod, found underneath bark 20 meters up in a tree! I can't imagine why they'd need to be so colorful, but I sure am glad they are. Pyrgoniscus sp. (ID'd on iNaturalist.) Tsitongambarika Forest, Anosy Region, Madagascar

There’s a really silly article circulating right now about the #JoroSpider . Besides the expected sensationalism and “spiders are sooo scary”, there’s just not any reason to believe the joro spider will be seen along the entire east coast this year. It IS expanding fast, however.

This summer and fall, the #JoroSpider range expansion continued across the southeast. Data from @inaturalist observations and maps created in @rstudio. The range expansion in the past two years is really incredible. #invasivespecies

Miss Mattie Wadsworth was one of the earliest #American women to study #odonates in the late 1800s. She observed 43 species in Manchester, Maine, publishing often during 30 years of study. One species she discovered, Celithemis martha, was named in her honor. #WomensHistoryMonth

What have Joro spiders been up to since their introduction to Georgia 8 years ago? I turned to iNaturalist data and my modest R skillset to find out. The answer is "enjoying Georgia". https://t.co/LYiQkY1O6k
