i know you’re all genuinely sick of me talking about hazels great escape at this point but this was fun to write, and also
@Slate
did the most metal illustration of all time and I thank them
monkeypox carries an isolation period of 3-4 weeks and that is obviously more sick days than most workers get per year. so this is going to be very very bad
tried to send someone in a Georgia jail a birthday card, only to have it returned because it violates the jail’s “no greeting cards” policy. a shining example of the pointless, dumb cruelty that abounds within a system run by unimaginative ghouls
watching Palestinians whose Twitter accounts I have followed for years - both regular citizens and journalists - go from posts of desperation about the current hell in Gaza to silence and then the announcement of their deaths is a modern horror I don't really have the words for
Hind Rajab died one of the most horrifying deaths you could imagine for a kid — or anyone — surrounded by her dead family in a car, terrified as IDF forces moved in. the kind of story that sits in your stomach for years after you hear it. honoring her in this way is so beautiful.
Taking over Hamilton Hall as done in 1968, Columbia students unfurl a banner that reads "Hind's Hall," in reference to Hind Rajab, a six-year-old girl killed by Israeli forces.
Hundreds of students cheer as the banner is revealed, erupting into chants to "Free Palestine."
people in atlanta did literally everything in their power to stop cop city the "right" way. countless hours spent canvassing, testifying at public meetings, calling in to public comment, liaising w elected officials, sending open records requests, etc. they were summarily ignored
On every parent-related holiday, I hope we can find a few minutes to reflect on the 5.7 million children in the US who have experienced parental incarceration. That’s 1 in 12 kids. This country cages parents at an incredible rate while pretending to care about kids & families.
sleeping off a v large breakfast which included an egg and some peanut butter and half an avocado. she’s still doing a lot of sleeping and not able to run or jump like usual, but her paw wounds are healing quickly and today she stood on her hind legs again for the first time
It’s 2021. People incarcerated in prisons and jails should be allowed to have cell phones, and that should not be a controversial position! Small thread on why this would be an important and positive policy shift:
tonight there was a vigil for our comrade who draped herself in a Palestinian flag and lit herself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Atlanta on December 1. she has been in Grady hospital since then.
My god. The autopsy shows bullet exit wounds through both of Tort's hands, indicating that their hands were raised when they were murdered.
"The autopsy further reveals that Manuel was most probably in a seated position, cross-legged when killed."
Southern Poverty Law Center is trending because a person who works as an attorney at their office was arrested in the forest last night AS A LEGAL OBSERVER. and charged with domestic terrorism. this is what's happening in Atlanta. stop Cop City.
NEW: Baltimore Police say the person shot was 17 years old, saying he was displaying traits of an armed person before he took off running. Officers rendered aid and the 17 year old is in critical condition.
@wjz
her pain meds have kicked in and my adrenaline is wearing off and I’m realizing probably neither of us have slept in a week so we’re going to go cuddle up for the rest of eternity
Nygil’s mom said she had called a behavioral health center to make sure they had a bed available for her son, who was in crisis. She told 911 dispatchers she would follow police to the center & fill out the paperwork. “All you have to do is transport him."
the vet office who lost hazel won’t even give me any update on the condition she was in when she escaped. no one will talk to me. I didn’t find out she was even at the vet until she had been there over 24 hours. she was brought in for eating the sitters delta 8 gummies
last night in Atlanta, a group of armed Georgians wishing to overturn a democratic election stalked the capitol, necessitating the evacuation of Sec of State Brad Raffensperger. another group gathered in solidarity with Kenosha & Black lives. guess who got arrested?
for the dedicated HazelHeads — a week post Great Adventure and she’s almost totally back to normal! this is her go-to begging move (she couldn’t do it until yesterday because her back was too sore)
if the right is going to call you a radical marxist literally no matter what your actions are, you might as well do the cool radical shit you're being accused of idk
In a press conference Atlanta Police dramatically displayed gardening tools taken from todays Block Cop City march and said they were meant to “do harm” but actually they were being used to plant sapling native trees along the route
the time is always ripe to talk about GETTING COPS OUT OF TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT. every part of the experience of driving would be safer. traffic stops are the most common encounter between civilians and cops! also police use them to extract money from people, esp poor people!
we've broken the record for hottest day recorded on earth twice this week and atlanta wants to raze a forest -- natural air conditioning, among so many other things -- to build a playground for cops
my friend just reminded me of this thought experiment from Bryan Stevenson -- imagine if, post WW II, Germany had kept the death penalty. Imagine that they still use it today, and disproportionally execute Jewish people, especially those who commit crimes against Christians.
to the people saying the US doesn’t do dissent like this because we don’t have the “moxie” — in Atlanta a LEGAL OBSERVER was just arrested & charged with terrorism. protest in the world’s incarceration capital with a trigger-happy police force & trigger happy judges is different
if you’re a staffer for a member of congress who is not calling for a cease fire, please walk out. you don’t have to sit idly by while your boss fans the flames of genocide. walk out and demand a ceasefire.
if you're just tuning in to what's going on in Atlanta, three organizers with the Atlanta Solidarity Fund -- the city's largest bail fund -- were arrested this morning at their homes. ASF provides jail support to ensure those in police custody have their rights protected 1/
it’s impossible for me to square my life experience — with nothing ever remotely resembling horrors like this — with the reality that this is happening to a person right now. millions of people, right now. while i sit in a comfortable, warm home, feeling safe and healthy.
The Atlanta City Council, after hearing over 15 hours of public comment against Cop City, passed an astonishing $67 million in funding for the project by an 11-4 vote. The people are incredible and there isn’t democracy in Atlanta.
If you are the man who saved Hazel please — I need to speak to you so badly!!! I’m hearing so many different accounts of what happened. If you really for sure caught her and firmly handed her to someone that changes how all of us are searching. Please please reach out to me
it's very hot. did you know the cooling impact of just one healthy tree (from both evaporation and absorbing sunlight) is "equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 24 hours a day," per the USDA? razing a forest to build cop city would make ATL so much more vulnerable
So because of all your generosity another dog has a chance at being found, & we’ll donate the rest to the Atlanta Humane society. I’ll share screenshots when it’s done. Lastly, truly, this saga has reaffirmed my love & faith in humanity. From the bottom of my heart thank you all
this is a great example of copaganda. note that the headline (which is what most people read, no further) doesn’t convey that it was the police doing the chasing and causing the crash; instead, the cop is the baby-comforting hero.
hey if it isn’t abundantly clear to you yet, prisons and jails everywhere in this country are in crisis. inedible or nonexistent food, rampant use of solitary, serious understaffing, unprecedented levels of violence and illness. the solution is setting people free
the bag of clean water on the left is a sample upstream of Cop City construction. the dirty water on the right— full of sediment pollution — is the result of Cop City tree removal and land disturbance and represents (shocking no one!) a violation of the Clean Water Act.
Oooo also! The woman knew to call me because she had read the
@Decaturish
article. And that article happened because of all you lovely wonderful people. Local media is amazing; please help support it:
i'm coming to this probably slower than i should've but as a millenial who came of age at the peak of the usable internet era, man, everything i used to trust/rely on basically doesn't exist anymore
A transgender Atlanta woman was arrested for sitting on the curb. Officers went through her bag, found a STRESS BALL, cut it open, tested it, & claimed it contained cocaine (it didn't). She spent the next half year in jail, at times in solitary.
Sorry, did you think Atlanta was just criminalizing bail funds and ignoring attempts at direct democracy this week? Add another militarized raid by APD and FBI of vocal Cop City opponents to this list. Fascism. Is. Here.
Atlanta Police conducted a raid on the house of vocal Cop City opponents in Lakewood Heights Thursday Morning, neighbors report.
Media contacts from the Stop Cop City movement say police raided two additional houses and three people have been arrested.
by the way, St. Francis Emergency Vet is owned by Thrive Pet Healthcare. NO ONE HAS REACHED OUT TO ME FROM THRIVE PET HEALTHCARE. YOU LOST MY DOG AND NO ONE HAS CALLED ME. NO ONE HAS APOLOGIZED. NO ONE HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT A CORPORATE RESPONSE. THEY ARE NOT HELPING REMOTELY.
A young adult -- 32 years old -- knew something was wrong, and begged for medical attention while he was held at the Clayton County Jail. His increasingly desperate requests for help were summarily ignored. He died of testicular cancer in January.
wild that Atlanta police murdered a 62 year old church deacon with a taser this week and it’s been like a tiny blip in the news cycle. no cop city here, no cop cities anywhere, abolition now.
A few updates and then I promise you won’t be annoyed by me for a while!! A woman in Decatur opened her door this morning & Hazel was on the porch. She assumed it was a neighbors dog and shooed her away but Hazel decided she was going inside no matter what and invited herself in
She’s still herself though! I know she’s going to recover fully. And here’s even more good news — we already bought the billboard space, but there’s another missing dog in Decatur so that family can use them! I offered reward to the family who got Hazel & they generously said no
also this is a lil different from covid, which a worker could presumably hide from an employer if they were desperate and needed shifts. much harder to do that with a pox virus that is covering you in lesions!! so people are probably just going to lose work, amid record inflation
The three Atlanta Solidarity Fund organizers who were arrested on bogus charges are having their first hearing today in DeKalb County Court, in front of Judge Altman. Thread:
you should know that the workers at St Francis Emergency Vet will lose your dog and then allow them to be scared cold and with a CATHETER IN in the woods while they go home and sleep in their cozy beds. take your animals literally anywhere else for care
this morning, 61 people are being arraigned in a RICO case against Cop City activists. tomorrow is Election Day and the original date Atlanta would have voted on Cop City if the city hadn’t fought the referendum in court. state repression on full display
folks arrested in the forest attending a music festival are having their second bond hearing in DeKalb Court today. so far it's seeming like the judge will be granting (fairly expensive) bonds, as the prosecution has no evidence.
It was about 1.4 miles from the vet (by car.) Tons of highways; fencing; construction. WHO KNOWS how Hazel did this. She’s been to a vet and checked out. Aside from scrapes and cuts and some issues w back legs, she’s just exhausted and in pain. Waiting on blood work.
jesus. the next person is denied bond. being held against them is the fact that they had a jail support number on them. that's being painted as evidence they came to commit a crime, when in fact, it's evidence that we live in a horrifying police state
since the Atlanta Police are in the news after handcuffing Ryan Coogler for trying to withdraw his own money, let's talk about their quota system, which penalizes officers for not arresting enough people and gives extra points (5!) for arresting kids
this is the Stop Cop City organizer that Atlanta Police just arrested and charged with criminal trespass outside of Home Depot. an incredible movement elder and a well known local activist.
Atlanta I’m not here but my dog escaped a dog sitter and I’m losing my mind please please please look out for her near St Francis Animal Hospital and share this
to be clear the vets who lost my precious dog and are now not giving me information: St Francis Emergency Vet, 625 Dekalb Industrial Way, Decatur, GA 30033
please help me local news — someone said he caught a dog looking like hazel in the intersection by the Waffle House on DeKalb Industrial. he then….handed her to an Indian/south Asian woman and her child on the sidewalk. WE NEED TO FIND THEM AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW
A reminder that the state can kidnap and cage you for however long they wish. Maurice Jimmerson has been held in the Dougherty County Jail for a DECADE. He has pleaded not guilty. His jail cell is less than seven miles away from his mother’s home.
THREAD: Our client, John Lokos, loves to feed birds. He is 82. His Parkinson's causes his hands to shake constantly; his dementia makes it difficult to remember simple things, like where he lives; he has fainting spells & forgets to eat.
Our government is planning to deport him.
the literal first page of the RICO indictment against 60+ people who don’t want to see Cop City built starts off with a huge error. the forest land is not owned by the Atlanta Police Foundation. it’s owned by the city and leased to APF.
after setting up a peaceful encampment this morning, students are being violently arrested at Emory University. they are being held down and tased. tear-gassed. shot at with rubber bullets.
I can’t update Hazel’s missing flier to be helpful because the vet doesn’t know anything or they are lying. They won’t let me speak with the tech who lost her. They promised me she was wearing her collar which has my number — dog sitter just confirmed she wasn’t wearing one. ?!?
can’t really underscore enough how much of a 5 alarm fire moment this is in journalism (which is to say….in society.) fighting fascism requires a strong, healthy media ecosystem, and the billionaires et al who are buying and gutting every outlet are well aware of that.
A man had a seizure in his cell, and instead of helping him, jail staff handcuffed him, placed him in a restraint chair, and left. He died of a heart attack. He was in jail because he shared a weed cookie with his girlfriend, violating his probation.
no media outlet should use the phrase “officer-involved shooting” to describe a cop holding the back of a man’s shirt and shooting him seven times, at close range, in the back. don’t capitalize Black and then say “officer-involved shooting” my god
Baltimore resident Leon Haughton likes to have honey in his tea, so he brought back a few jars from a visit to family in Jamaica. Customs officers seized the honey, and claimed it was liquid meth. He spent 82 days in jail. He lost both his jobs.
The cops originally claimed they were "ambushed" in the forest. Then they claimed that they gave orders to Tort and they were ignored. Now their story has changed yet again; admitting they shot at Tort first. Autopsy shows Tort was seated with hands up.
PLEASE ONLY USE THIS NEW FLIER FOR HAZEL — the vet told me they were positive she was wearing her blue paisley collar with her name on it and my number but when I got to my house…her collar and leash are still here. So try not to share the poster with the collar description
SB 63 — which would criminalize bail funds in Georgia — passed the Senate today. The bill would make bailing more than 3 people out of jail per YEAR a crime for bail funds and nonprofits. It also increases the number of non-bail-eligible offenses.
SPOKE TO THE VET finally. Because a sitter brought her in I wasn’t notified and that’s not really the vets fault. She informed me Hazel was pretty unwell when she ran off.
I also spoke with the manager. The manager was not there when hazel was lost. I’m still incensed at this gross negligence but appreciative of the two warm interactions I have had with the vet and manager.
