Just went honking car-joyful-cruising with the hubz, the 99 y.o. mother-in-law and the pooch. All of us celebrated the people. We drove behind a skinny kid who held up a sign, “make America kind again." It was a crowd favorite.

One of my grandsons heard me talking about this victory and turned to me and said,”I bet Jorts is happy” and then his brother added “and Jean too”. They are 12 and 9!! Teach your children well.
If you are upset with chants at the protests consider: US 155mm artillery shells used in Gaza painted with graffiti “This weaponization of graffiti physically directs a message at people who will 'receive’ it only through an explosive act of obliteration”
Great stuff."... encoding and encasing private property rights much less private capital’s rights to coordinate or contract....these costs are “baked into” society. So...should it be for rights to income healthcare housing education employment for all."

This special edition of this journal is a lovely, bittersweet tribute to my nephew Evan Weissman. The tributes from his students and colleagues make our hearts break--how much we have lost with his death. You can get a sense of him from these tributes.
Social justice organizations function as desistance-related support mechanisms; the ameliorating benefits inure not only to individuals implicated in criminal legal matters—including gender violence—but more broadly to community well-being. Thanks

This is the line rn for COVID testing at UNC. There is only one testing location on campus and it closes at 2pm today and won’t reopen until Monday.
UNC MUST expand testing capacities if we have any hope of staying safe.

Extraordinary Rendition as Torture. Dr. Porterfield, psychologist/expert on effects of torture, testified: “[b]eing rendered was an experience, as I have heard it described, that involved total and complete physical, psychological and spiritual coercion and control.”

We have to govern from a place of love. Because I love you, I care that you have food to eat, a roof over your head, a safe place to live, the healthcare you need, and the education you deserve.
My love means I want to see every single person live a decent life.
Honestly: for me, this feels like the hardest semester of the pandemic. I want to give all of myself to my family & students—and I will—but it feels like there’s less of me to go around. The insistence on “business as usual” both feels impossible & makes it especially exhausting.
One of my favorite holiday memories is spending time with my father-in-law, Lou Pérez (RIP). He was a loving parental figure in my adult life. I remember him fondly scolding me with such care "M’hija, why didn’t you listen to me and get your flu shot?"
The N.C. Supreme Court issued a 6-1 decision, written by Justice Anita Earls, in favor of a defendant who argued prosecutors had removed potential black jurors. It's the first time a N.C. appellate court has ruled for a black defendant on a Batson claim.

Of course, poor, working, BIPOC don't experience neoliberalism as a reduction in state capacity/withering of the state given the punitive, oppressive intrusions, etc.
Conservative law profs who continue to honor the racist, sexist anti-LGBTQ animus of Scalia along with his abominable hypocrisy should be ashamed of themselves. Stop it.

Read Majid Khan’s full statement. Take it in. Then imagine what such a statement by Abu Zubaydah would include…things that are so horrible that DOJ demands review/redaction privileges before he can submit a statement in a Polish investigation into his treatment there.
