I’m hoping that this FBI investigation will be the tipping point that finally forces the NCAA to compensate players. Either they’ll have a bunch of ineligible athletes and fired coaches, or they’ll finally do what’s right.

New Zealand bans semiautomatic rifles less than 24 hours after the Christchurch mass shooting. Imagine: elected officials putting public safety over gun manufacturers’ profits.
Americans deserve better than lawmakers who are letting gun lobbyists write our nation’s gun laws.
The NCAA creates the legal fiction that NIL isn’t pay for play, so we end up with player contracts disguised as marketing deals—and then some NIL agents charge the “standard” 15-20% for marketing deals, rather than 3-4%. And once again college athletes get screwed.
Some thoughts on NIL and making good decisions. 🧵
1. True NIL for college athletes is too new to understand actual market value. It’s changing quickly…so it’s whatever someone’s willing to pay.

Can’t have a proper press box without you. 🌹
The NCAA is living in its own nightmare.
3 months into NIL - and after 6 Congressional hearings - there's still no federal NIL law. The NLRB has just cleared another path for athletes to kill amateurism.
The NCAA is losing control fast.

I see Dale Murphy, the snowflake who had me, then a 21-year old reporter, removed from the Braves clubhouse at Candlestick because he thought women didn’t belong there, hasn’t evolved much.👌
The NCAA lowering its enforcement standards to allow circumstantial evidence will likely disproportionately harm college athletes, mostly in revenue sports, who have so much to lose and typically don’t have the $$ to adequately defend themselves.

Great point by Mark Hillinksi, father of late WSU QB Tyler Hilinski who committed suicide: We find the time and money for (college) teams to have 12 diff. Uniform combos but we need to find the time and money for student athlete mental health

Catch 22 of NIL: athletes rely on promises from collectives but NCAA rules prohibit “signing”inducements.
Pro tip: If a collective makes a promise, get it in writing & make sure its compliant w NCAA rules/state laws.
Helps to have a competent lawyer/agent on your side. 🤔
There are several college football players who were made NIL promises by collectives. Many of those players have received either no money or significantly less than promises made. Always handle your business first. It ain’t no love in the game.

The
#Raiders
and the Coliseum Authority have reached an agreement for the team to remain in Oakland for the 2019 season at least and the sides are ironing out final nuances and details of the deal, sources say. It could be wrapped up and presented to the board as early as Friday.
Back to reality: a database for asymmetric NIL deals, esp with private companies not wanting deal terms & language disclosed, won’t lead to athletes signing better deals so it’s a waste imo.
I’d support a database for schools paying athletes directly. Maybe one day!🤞
3. The “pay for play” deals disguised as NIL rely on boosters who talk a big game, but see what happens when you ask to put those promises in writing. (Also, make sure the legal language is specifically not pay for play. 😉)
