Here we describe how translation initiation from alternative AUG or non-AUG codons may create additional nuclear and mitochondrial forms of the helicase, create improved nuclear- and mitochondrial-null separation-of-function alleles, and refine the Pif1 mRNA translation model.

In what initially seemed a small detour from his main PhD, Tomás embarked on a project to understand how uncharacterized isoforms of the Pif1 helicase might be affecting the phenotypes of its classical separation-of-function pif1-m2and pif1-m1 mutant alleles.

Yesterday was an emotional day for us. The first member of the old guard that joined the lab at its very inception, defended her PhD thesis. This accomplishment took a great deal of effort and tenacity from her, so kudos to the newly minted Dr. Vanesa Hurtado.
