regardless of whether or not his last film will be good, tarantino's narcissistic conception of his own project ensures that, to me, he will remain a curio in cinematic history rather than as a truly great director. great artists are willing to fail, which tarantino is afraid of.

this is the exact same story premise as toy story, cars, inside out, zootopia, and soul. pixar keeps recycling this setting of 'what if non-human things acted like people and lived in their own mundane society' and it gets more uninspired looking every single time

this is due to the fact that drive-away dolls doesn't pander to the slick instagram/tumblr moodboard set of contemporary queer signifiers, but rather is closer to the punkish/grotesque queer underground of the 90s. dolls resists its own moment, looks singular and not anonymous.
i honestly find the reception to Drive-Away Dolls totally perplexing. especially in context of how much everyone seems to love Bottoms? it should clearly be the other way around

something that struck me last year is how hayley atwell was given such a dynamic and charming introduction in dead reckoning, it felt like a revelation, the movie creates so much space for her charcter's emotional journey. she was empowered to look and act like a real movie star.
Part of the reason we’re short on movie stars isn’t necessarily because of a lack of talent. Filmmakers have forgotten how to introduce and frame an actor into a star.
No one knows how to introduce an actor anymore. They just do a bland medium shot and keep it going.
