In regard to football:
If you get bigger but stay the same speed, that's a win.
If you stay the same size but get faster, that's also a win.
If you get bigger and faster, that's a big win.

I made the climb, and it still works.
A maximum velocity sprint isn't a rep.
Forces at 4 to 5 times body weight on a single leg with contact times around a tenth of a second. Those are the reps.
That's a lot of reps. Keep your sets low.
From what I've encountered, most hs teams in Georgia follow this schedule:
M - Afternoon practice
Tu - Afternoon practice
W - Afternoon practice
Th - Morning walkthru
(JV game Thursday night)
F - Gameday
Sa - Work from home
Su - Coaches meet
Does your team follow this schedule?
I'm excited to announce that I've been named Jackson High School's Defensive Coordinator! To take the torch from Coach Eakin is an honor I don't take lightly. He was a great mentor to me this past season, and I look forward to carrying on his legacy of smart, tough defense!

Simply "running track" won't make you better at another sport, put you in line to earn a college scholarship, or fast-track you to becoming a pro athlete, BUT a track program that prioritizes improvements in acceleration and Vmax ability will reap athletic benefits far and wide.
"We've got 7 kids that run 4.4!"
I'm sorry to hear that.
"Why do you say that?"
I don't have anyone faster than 4.6, but we beat y'all by 4 touchdowns and just smoked you in the 4x1... So you either don't understand 4.4 or you're a really bad coach.
Thinking about paying dudes off the street to walk into our weightroom with a D1 school's quarterzip on.
You should've seen those weights moving after dude walked in today.
Lift every day like you think a D1 coach is watching. If we did that, then we'd really be cooking w/ gas.
My stipend as a position coach in Georgia is larger than what I received as a head football coach in Illinois.
The state-based teachers pay scale is fair as are the state-based health insurance options.
I may move back to the Midwest some day, but it'd have to be a sweet gig.
"Coach, I'm from Alaska Wesleyan. We're a D3 program twenty minutes south of the Arctic Circle. We're looking for players with a 3.8 or higher. Tuition per year in the low 60's. Do you have anyone for us?"
40-yard dash split breakdown. Race modeling in the 1st pic. How it compares to NFLSC data in the 2nd pic. I've tinkered for months trying to get the accel/fly splits to line up correctly. Please use data to help identify your athletes' strengths/weaknesses & program accordingly!
If, for high school boys, the following are thresholds for "great"
Clean = 225# or 1.5xBW
Bench = 315# or 1.75xBW
Squat = 405# or 2.00xBW
TBDL = 495# or 2.25xBW
Then what would be the equivalent for high school girls?
Coaching transitions suck, even if you feel good about the next chapter. You invest in a place, but there's no guarantee that place will invest in you. As a renter with no kids of my own, I have weaker binding ties than most. To all the coaches out there in limbo right now, ❤️.
I see a lot of nonsense on Twitter this morning, and it makes me sad that we're getting away from solving real issues that affect real people.
Like how completely asinine Bear Bryant's technique numbering system truly is.

Georgia geography: Jackson isn't in Jackson County. Monroe isn't in Monroe County. Forsyth isn't in Forsyth County. Macon isn't in Macon County. Oglethorpe isn't in Oglethorpe County. Calhoun isn't in Calhoun County. Morgan isn't in Morgan County. Douglas isn't in Douglas County.
Our hearts are broken today. Unimaginable tragedy befell one of our players last night as both of his parents passed away in a car accident on their way to watch the Red Devils play. Please keep the Jackson community in your thoughts and prayers through this most trying of times.
Why is sprinting king?
"During each ground contact when running at top speed, competitive athletes generally apply average vertical forces of 2.0-2.5x body weight and peak vertical forces of 3.0-5.0x body weight." ~

If you can bench press 315 lbs but can't throw a 12-lb shot 40 feet, you've got a power and/or coordination problem. Strength without power and coordination never got a football player very far.
I don't have any characters to spare in my Twitter bio, but I did want to take a moment to share this milestone with you all. (I passed the test on my first attempt.)
A not-quite-comprehensive list of folks I've stolen from via Twitter over the last year.
It's the last slide in my presentation tomorrow. I wouldn't be where I am without y'all.
After eight years of teaching high school English, tomorrow is the first day of my career where I call the weightroom my classroom. Three block sections of approximately forty boys. Do you have any advice as I embark on this next chapter of my career?

I have created the greatest change of direction drill known to man:
1. Provide a space constraint.
2. Delegate an athlete as "it."
3. Have "it" pursue other athletes in that space.
4. If "it" touches another athlete, they are now "it."
5. Repeat process until exhaustion.
"Coach, what can I do for [insert minor injury]?"
3️⃣ questions:
1. How much sleep did you get last night?
2. How much water have you drank since yesterday's practice?
3. What did you eat for breakfast?
If you're 0-for-3 on these, you don't REALLY care about getting better.
"If you want our philosophy, it starts with speed & power. Strength doesn't even factor in. It's an accessory for us. The best athletes on the field are the ones that are fast, powerful & explosive at all times. All of our athletes sprint."

Saying S&C coaches need to be in good shape if they're going to be programming athletes is like saying every English teacher should be a published author before they're allowed to teach the subtleties of the language.
Most folks, including a majority of high school football coaches, have no idea just how good you have to be to be a serviceable college football player AT ANY LEVEL.
What's your state's best high school mascot?
In Georgia, it's hard to decide between the Atom Smashers and the Syrupmakers.
In Illinois, it's gotta be the Cornjerkers.
Justin Reid and Obi Melifonwu both ran 4.40 at the NFLSC.
They are also tied for the slowest 20y fly segment (1.85) of anyone running 4.40 or faster over the last 5 years.
1.85 over 20y is 22.1 MPH.
In short, if you can't fly at 23 MPH over 20y on a track, you can't run 4.40.

Hot take:
Golf pants are far more comfortable than jeans.
While I appreciate the sentiment, jeans on Friday is a hollow reward.
It should be replaced with "Dress like a PE teacher."
