I have been in "emergency mode" on climate for the past 10 years when I left my job to become an activist.
What people don't understand is that even people like me are surprised at how badly this is going. I thought we had more time.
While everything is going haywire in the northern hemisphere, something even more statistically wild is happening around Antarctica where winter sea ice regrowth is failing.
Scientists are calling it a "5 sigma event" which means extreme and impossible without global warming.
It’s hard to believe how crazy the weather is getting and how the vast majority of people are still acting normal.
The climate emergency is not linear, it is accelerating. We are in such terrible danger.
Challenge: Add an Indian city to your weather app this week.
When you check the weather, consider how the 1 billion people in India are doing in this brutal, deadly heatwave.
Then consider what you can do to protect humanity and the living world.
To all the climate-activism critics.
I am once again asking you:
What is the “right” way for them to protest?
What protest gets lots of attention, raises the alarm about the climate emergency, puts pressure on politicians- AND doesn’t bother anyone?
Think you can do better than throwing soup onto a painting? Please do.
Seriously, I am begging you.
We need the movement to be huge. PLEASE help build a movement and design actions according to your vision.
I hope they will be tremendously successful.
Rome crushes its all-time temperature record by two degrees--two degrees *Celsius.*
That's statistically...crazy. But it shows we're living on a new planet
I wish the Democratic Party, and the philanthropic establishment that supports them understood: This is a HUGE opportunity.
If we make the climate emergency the
#1
voting issue in 2024, the GOP will not be able to compete.
It shouldn't be that hard, given the ongoing floods,…
If I was being asked to draw a picture of the Apocalypse, it would probably be something like this. The planet is being boiled alive

We are in terrible danger.
Not “future generations.”
Not “your grandchildren”
Not other, far off people.
You, and your family, me and my family ....the whole human family.
We are all in terrible danger.
I don’t think the public understands that people like Peter (and me) who have been deeply terrified about the climate emergency for years-are SHOCKED at how quickly the climate emergency is unfolding.
Even we “alarmists” were too optimistic.
“The majority of the population of the northwest territories of Canada were evacuated last night because all of the major settlements are threatened by separate fires. All of them.”
Can anyone help me with a logic problem?
At present, we have warmed the planet 1.2°C and are experiencing massive droughts, crop loss, fires, floods and ice-melt.
How can 2° of warming be the "safe limit?"
Who out there is *newly* freaked out about the climate emergency?
Welcome to the truth based community. You must be going through a lot emotionally. What’s it been like? It would be great to hear from you.
The climate protestors are trying to protect us all from catastrophe!
I’m sorry they are annoying… no one wants to bother people. But they are raising the alarm and alarms are annoying. I promise you climate collapse is a million times worse.
Ironically earlier in the week climate protestors blockaded the road to Burning Man. An event deemed unsustainable by some for its climate impact, has now had 2 years of major & dangerous adverse weather.

During this time of climate emergency, private planes are an abomination. Ban them now.
It feels so strange and alienating that the vast majority of people are still living their lives as normal (rather than desperately trying to cancel the apocalypse and protect humanity and the living world.)
And the most horrifying thing: the climate emergency is rapidly accelerating. It’s time to start treating the climate like the apocalyptic emergency it is. We must make protecting humanity our top priority, and mobilize for decarbonization at emergency speed.
I don't think it's exaggeration to say that much of the West Coast is a hellscape right now. Nothing about any of this is "normal," and it's beyond disturbing.
I really wish everyone talking about the collapse of the United States included the critical context of the accelerating climate and ecological crisis. Things are never going back to normal. We are in terrible danger. What happens next is up to us.
The reason activists are “obsessed” with climate change is because we love humanity and this world and want, more than anything, to protect what we love.
The most important thing to understand about the climate crisis is that you are in danger. Not "future generations." You, me, your family, my family. The whole human family. We are ALL in acute danger, and we must respond with everything that we have.

How could we protect humanity and the natural world at this late hour?
A thread.
There is still a brief opportunity for humanity to wake up and fight back against the accelerating climate and ecological crises with everything we have.
Polling questions I want to see:
Do you expect climate change to devastate global food production?
Do you expect climate change to cause civilization to collapse?
Do you expect to lose your home due to climate change?
Do you expect climate-induced collapse to cause your death?
“The new Quinnipiac poll found that 55 percent of Americans are expecting a “significant negative effect” from climate change, while 41 percent are not.”
(A rare non-climate post)
People in NYC should know about the city's "One Shot Deal" program. If you are facing eviction, the city will pay your owed rent, if you can pay your rent going forward. Not perfect, but can really help.
On behalf of environmentalists, I apologize for being euphemistic with the public for decades.
Let me correct the record:
We are in a full blown climate emergency. Siberia is 100 degrees. Global food supplies are in danger. Look at Syria and see the climate-collapsed future.
NEW: We’re facing a climate crisis.
We need bold action.
CA is phasing out the internal combustion engine.
By 2035 every new car sold in CA will be an emission free vehicle.
Cars shouldn’t give our kids asthma.
Make wildfires worse.
Melt glaciers.
Or raise sea levels.
Are you struggling with climate truth?
Feeling terror, despair, and overwhelm?
I wrote a book for you.
It will help you turn all of that pain into effective action to protect humanity and the living world.

In 2014, this French weather presenter announced the forecast for August 18, 2050 as part of a campaign to alert to the reality of climate change. Now her forecast that day is the actual forecast for the coming 4 or 5 days, in mid-June 2022.
It’s ok to have hateful thoughts and feelings! They are part of being human, and can’t hurt anyone- only actions can.
There is no need to judge yourself for them or try to suppress them. Enjoy them!

I think part of being a climate activist, and possibly any kind of activist, is absorbing hate non-defensively.
You think the action was terrible and we are idiots? That’s fine. We will still fight for you and your family and the whole human family.
Putting my clinical psychologist hat on.
The people who are freaked out about soup-on-glass are, on a deeper level, freaking out about the climate emergency.
They feel terror and grief welling up inside of them.
It becomes- I hate the activists who made me feel this way!
As a clinical psychologist turned climate activist, I wrote a radical self-help book to help people face the incredibly painful reality of the climate emergency.

Being clear eyed about the climate emergency is like having magical powers to predict the future.
Except it’s not magic, it’s the vast majority of people refusing to see.
The climate emergency hurts because we love this world. We love our families, humanity, and the web of life. But how do we turn that pain into action?
I am pleased to share my Guest Essay in the New York Times (!)
As the fires rage, one of the things you may be feeling is grief for your own future. We all have plans, goals, and hopes that depend on a safe and stable climate and a functioning society.
As that breaks down, we realize our best laid plans aren't gonna happen. 1/4
