Just a reminder that the Islamic University of Gaza has been destroyed. Staff members have been killed. Its website is offline.
Genocide is not only the murder of people but also the erasure of their institutions. European academia has been completely silent about this crime.
Today a Palestinian MA student from the destroyed Al Azhar University successfully defended his MA thesis in a tent in Rafah. The student now plans to do a PhD in Education.

I am trying to find out how many academics and researchers have been killed in Gaza. Here is a thread of martyred academics I have seen announced on Twitter. Please feel free to add to it.
The World Cup in Qatar is a rare moment of open space and assembly in the Arab region. It is very telling that as soon as a free forum emerges, it has been immediately filled with explicit expressions of solidarity for the Palestinians.
I am an academic and I call for a free Palestine and an end to the Israeli state's apartheid. This is integral to both my moral world view and my scholarship
"Palestinians need a Ghandi" say the same people who smeared BDS as antisemitic, and who completely ignored the Great March of Return in 2018, when Israeli snipers gunned down hundreds of Palestinian protestors on the border fence.
“This is the biggest cohort of pediatric amputees in history,” a reconstructive surgeon who specializes in pediatric trauma said, of the record number of children who have been injured in the war in Gaza.
Why are Western media saying that the cause of violence in Palestine is the coincidence of Passover, Easter and Ramadan? This is not a religious conflict. The cause of violence is one of the longest military occupation in history and the Israeli state's system of apartheid.

I am very sorry to hear that Leiden University's management has cancelled a student-led event on Palestine next week. This is in clear breach of academic freedom and makes a mockery of the university's motto "praesidium libertatis".
The biggest loss for the Israeli military is its prestige, the perception of total dominance over Palestinians, and the idea that occupation can be maintained without resistance. No matter what the immediate response, that will not be easy to regain
Western troops in Afghanistan killed thousands of civilians. At least 50,000 in 20 years. A few baby rescue photos at Kabul airport doesn't change this
This Palestinian victim of Israeli terrorism won't have his name published in a Western newspaper. His family will not be interviewed. There will be no international condemnation.
You really get an insight into the potential for unity and struggle that has been so deeply repressed. No wonder Israel views Arab dictatorships as integral to its continuity as a colonial entity. They are keeping a lid on a volcano.
In 2006 I was a journalist in Beirut covering the Hizbullah-Israel war. The Daily Express paid me to photograph stranded UK citizens, which I did. When I sent the photos of UK citizens of Lebanese descent, the editor asked me to go back and find people who 'looked more British'

Gaza's higher education system has been decimated. All universities, institutions and archives have been obliterated. At least 40 academics have been killed. How can Western universities continue institutional relations with their Israeli counterparts?
Antony Blinken: "We can never let the crimes Russia's committing become our new normal... bombing schools and hospitals and apartment buildings to rubble is not normal"
Israeli journalists being shunned and denounced in Qatar is not reflexive hatred; it reflects the Arab public's consistent refusal to accept occupation and apartheid. Normalisation is only possible when this sentiment is repressed. It is incompatible with democracy.

As a parent, I find it utterly unbearable to think that there is absolutely nothing parents in Gaza can do to protect their children. There is no safety anywhere.

This war on Gaza has been the most horrific thing I have ever observed, and I am sure I am not the only one to feel that. But I have never felt deeper resolve or committment to supporting peace and justice for all people in Palestine.
Within two weeks of the invasion of Ukraine, Dutch universities cut all ties with Russian institutions.
But after three weeks of indiscriminate bombing and 7000 casualties, Dutch institutions maintain full links with Israeli counterparts. This double standard is unacceptable.
Stop and reflect on how utterly useless and irrelevant many Western institutions are right now. The dissonance between their silence and complicity and the reality of the world is calamitous.
Where does this bike path lead?
To the train station, of course.
Because that's how you actually build urban transport infrastructure in the time of a climate crisis.
Institutional ties with Israeli universities are now untenable. In 2022 Dutch institutions cut ties with Russian universities on the basis that the invasion of Ukraine "was a direct assault on liberty and democracy". What will be the response to Israel's genocidal war in Gaza?
Leyen's contention that Israel "made the desert bloom" is a part of a long tradition of using the environment to justify European colonialism and appropriation.
Today we celebrate 75 years of Israel's independence and friendship with Europe.

Do you remember the silence in 2018 when thousands of Palestinians in Gaza demonstrated on the fence of the territory and Israel shot dead 183 people and more than 6000 were injured?
I have been to Erez several times and it is a symbol of despair and apartheid. The segregation and distress it causes is the antithesis of hope and coexistence
The Erez Crossing was once a key symbol for hope and coexistence. Before 10/7, Erez served as a main entryway for Gazans into Israel for work and humanitarian purposes. Hundreds of thousands of Gazans crossed into Israel via Erez this year, including 5,000+ for medical treatment.
The Israeli state is hell bent on finding those six escapees not because they represent a threat to Israel, but because they represent hope for Palestinians
The Orientalist tradition in Western academia dismisses the intellectual significance of colloquial Arabic. It is hostile to amiyyah and considers itself as the custodian of fusah. That's why it produces students who can discuss parliamentary elections but can't order a taxi

By all means boycott the World Cup due to Qatar's bad record on labour rights, but at least be consistent and think of the role of dire labour conditions in just about everything else you consume: food, clothes, electronics; almost all commodities.
It's amazing how low the barrier of entry is for some Middle East think tankers. An MA degree, a little bit of eloquence, and bucketloads of entitlement and opportunism is widely understood as expertise
This decision is in sharp contrast to the university's stance on Ukraine in recent weeks. The university has hosted numerous events and made public statements. But war and occupation in Palestine are just as important and should also be discussed on campus.
