It's true. Effective at the end of the month, I'm leaving
@ESPN
to become the sports editor of
@sfchronicle
Among the very few jobs you leave ESPN for, you leave for this one, and I am extremely grateful to
@garciaruize
for the opportunity.
Two small-town teachers trying to look out for their LGBT students drew the ire of a prominent conservative. What happened next is a snapshot of how inevitably complicated conversations about acceptance can be fractured by bad actors.
MLB has long had a basic demographic problem, with a shrinking, aging, male audience. Their answer to that is to try elevating one subsection of the sports marketplace with an especially horrific track record for misogyny & bigotry? The sport of Jackie Robinson deserves better.
Oakland was played exactly the way Montreal was played: A real possibility for keeping a team in place was identified, MLB plutocrats panicked, called names, blamed fans, and did what they wanted to all along.
He owes the Cubs no apologies for a period when they gleefully enjoyed the benefits of his performance, but if the same people who gave Bartman a ring can't let this go, that's on them.
The suggestion that MLB teams have to be incentivized to do the right thing in terms of putting the people who work for them and who belong in the majors, in the majors, instead of just doing it, is the perfect metaphor for what's wrong with the industry.
He did it,
@scottostler
: Brock Purdy completed a forward pass, on his first attempt no less, becoming the first Mr. Irrelevant in NFL history to do so.
After 22 years in the sports racket & 10 years as a
@officialBBWAA
member, this will be my first
#HOF
vote. My ballot may please some & inevitably anger others, but each choice will be motivated by a love of the game, the story its history tells & a healthy respect for excellence
Some happy personal news to share: I'm getting transferred to ESPN's Los Angeles campus (and sticking with MLB coverage, of course). Which means I'll be spending a lot of time at Chavez Ravine and in Anaheim.
Starting tomorrow, I take up my new duties on the night desk for ESPN, leaving the MLB group after 10 years. But given that the game has played a big part in how & why I'm here today, I have more than a few feelings about this. 1/
Pete Rose bet as a manager & lied about it.
Pete Rose bet as a player-manager & lied about it.
He hurt the game when he did it, he hurt it by denying what he did, and hurts the game to this day by still lying about it. There is no reason to reward his selfishness.
#StillGuilty
The speed with which American sports -- leagues & rights holders alike -- have sold out to sports gambling ranks among the most reprehensible and vile developments to have witnessed over my career. 1/2
I would pay a premium to be able to watch sports without gambling advertising of any kind. Like $50 a month, minimum. I don't even mean passive ads, like signs, or even commercials I can mute. The stuff I want to avoid the most is the mentions from the broadcast team.
A number of folks seem to think just being LGBT is activist. That gets the issues in play exactly wrong. LGBT folks & LGBT kids, simply are. Their existence is not political unless you choose to politicize it. Getting bent out of shape about their existence OTOH? Pretty active.
Now that it's probably over, I think we can safely say that the Cubs' handling of the Addison Russell situation will live on as a permanent example of what a front office and manager should *not* do or say.
In 2021 I left ESPN for the
@sfchronicle
, moved to the Bay Area, and loved every minute of it -- starting with
@StanfordWBB
winning it all & MLB Opening Day, thru 49ers picking Trey Lance, Giants winning NL West, Steph setting the record for 3's... and who knows what's next.
Main takeaway from MLBPA declarations on last night's misplaced optimism? A whole lot of media folks were only too ready to repeat owners' spin & call it news, w/o recognizing that by regurgitating a constructed narrative uncritically, they become themselves actors in the drama.
Thank you to all of the
#SFGiants
fans who shared their Buster Posey stories over the last few days, it was our privilege to pass them along in today's
@SportingGreenSF
There's increasingly a problem for starting pitchers when it comes to the Hall of Fame. Tim Lincecum was unquestionably one of baseball's best in his tremendous four-year run, and as
@JohnSheaHey
writes, Giants fans won't forget.
Journalists, please remember: There are no "transgender rights," only equal rights. If
@realDonaldTrump
wants to legalize discrimination against
#trans
Americans, be clear this is about creating, enforcing 2nd-class citizenship on millions of neighbors, friends, co-workers & kids
For those ready to carry water for "look, the A's will donate
#reverseboycott
ticket revenue," please do remember it lands same day that their reported, repeated failures on community benefits in Oakland required amending a bill coincidentally being voted on in Nevada TODAY 1/
This is an extraordinary honor, knowing the impact Jeanne Córdova had in life and to this day. Accepting it is not a case of looking back on my career with satisfaction, but a challenge to be worthy of it in everything I have yet to do.
Congratulations to Christina Kahrl, recipient of the 2023 Jeanne Córdova Award!
The Jeanne Córdova Award recognizes the achievement of an LGBTQ+ woman for a current body of work in journalism and/or opinion.

Alameda Co. supe says time to collect $45M John Fisher owes Bay Area citizens, A's have to pay up for their broken promise to be "rooted" in Oakland. From
@ScottOstler
What would be the perfect 2021 moment at the 2021 MLB All-Star Game? Gaylord Perry throws out the honorary first pitch ... and then submits for an ump inspection.
This. My quality of life & my career as a journalist have only gotten better since I came out two decades ago. Initiatives like Texas' proposal to steal trans kids from their parents & prosecute MDs for practicing medicine are designed to prevent more folks finding that happines.
Desperately sad thread about a public policy atrocity, whose real consequence -- medicalized sexual assault of any girl participating in sports -- is predicated on an imaginary problem, that trans or intersex kids have game-breaking competitive advantages.
Rights to the A's name? Dibs on an MLB expansion team? Sounds like Oakland isn't going to settle for John Fisher's money after MLB's smear campaign for a Coliseum lease extension. From
@scottostler
My positive takeaway from today's upbeat Oakland/A's/Port powwow was that some of the folks involved in planning the infrastructure needs in Seattle (which built two stadiums adjacent to its port) are involved with figuring out how to build a ballpark at Howard Terminal.
I mailed in my
@baseballhall
vote yesterday. Operating from the belief there are at least 16 worthy choices on the ballot, cutting down from 11 was especially hard. If my ballot could have gone to 11, I'd have been able to keep Billy Wagner.
There's something old-school baseball & wonderfully bespoke about where all of
@MLB
's rosin bags come from: One man's workshop, here in SF. Wonderfully well told by

How about a dose of real history for MLB's "Field of Dreams" scheme? Take it to Rickwood Field,
@Bruce_Jenkins1
argues. Let's truly celebrate the game as something that belongs to everyone -- by putting it in one of the few Negro League venues left.
Today's the fifth-year anniversary of Charley & I getting married, so it's official: After a decade together we have mutual 10-and-5 rights, and neither of us is getting traded to Cleveland without our approval.
I am so glad for
@susanslusser
, as I am forever in her debt for being in my corner when I came out, going to bat for me when I was allowed into
@officialBBWAA
, and for being a consistent ally as well as a tremendous friend.
For the record, I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community as a bisexual woman. Happy Pride month and congrats to the Giants for their long record of inclusion and support.
I am privileged to be so honored, not simply for itself, but because there is no finer advocate, journalist & friend that I could share it with than
@TransGriot
. I mourn her still.

Mailed off my
@baseballhall
2020 ballot today; not sure when I'll reveal the results (beyond delivering on my already-promised vote for Larry Walker), but I expect some decisions will not be popular.
It's unfortunate that MLB has apparently made a habit of being less than entirely honest on the subject of the A's, Oakland and the Coliseum, but here we are again. From
@scottostler
"All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid" -- Mack Beggs after winning his second girls state wrestling title in Texas while being prevented from wrestling against other boys.
On
#TransDayOfVisibility
, after more than 20 years out all I can say is this: I am me, the only me that I will ever be, the verb in my own life, act not object, full of joy, being, being free, being me. I wish that same happiness on every
#trans
person; you could too.
I have been verified. The irony, considering I was once told -- by a Twitter employee, as a guest of Twitter at their HQ -- that I was effectively not cool enough to ever be verified, reminds me how decidedly odd and perpetually high-school clique-y the entire process is.
I came out nearly 17 years ago, and though no end of elected representatives & hate groups have done and are doing their damnedest to hurt everyone like me, I'm still here. Better yet, I'm happy.
#NationalComingOutDay
So,
@susanslusser
wrote about the case for Brandon Crawford for NL MVP, and while I know what a lot of my stathead compadres will say, it isn't crazy talk.
Can't read this and help thinking about Drake's Brewing Co. pulling out of Fans Fest back in February. If there are ways to make the A's departure from Oakland uglier, it sure seems as if the team & its corporate partners are determined to find all of them.
NEW: Oakland Coliseum food and beverage concessionaire Aramark warned workers for A's baseball games that speaking publicly about layoffs could get them fired.
There are announcers who are national treasures & then there are people like Thom Brennaman showing something about themselves that make you wonder why he was ever granted th he privilege of calling a game, because the responsibility was clearly wasted on him.
The latest on the firing of Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter amid questions about the transfer of $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to a bookmaking operation under federal investigation, from ESPN’s Tisha Thompson:
Devastating. Working directly with Pedro through MLB's postseason was wonderful. He was more than eager to contribute to
@ESPN
digital coverage & dig into stories like Randy Arozarena's breakthrough. We shared ambitions for what was next; losing him is tragic.
I'll say this: Tonight's crowd is literally the loudest postseason crowd I've heard in person since 2011 NLCS Game 1 in Miller Park. Add in that this is outside, not inside, and it's pretty fierce. Good on ya,
#SFGiants
fans
My 2024 Baseball HOF ballot: Beltran, Beltre, Sheffield, Rollins, A-Rod, Manny, Utley, Mauer, Pettitte, Helton.
If I had 11, add Buehrle.
If I had 13, add Andruw and Wagner.
It's my good fortune that today starts my 8th year at
@ESPN
after 15+ at
@baseballpro
Like my Kentucky ancestor who moved to Ohio but swore she was "just visiting" decades later, it might be time to admit going back to grad school for that PhD in history may not be in the cards.
I understand & accept that voting for Sammy is my most controversial choice, but the game needed what Sosa & McGwire did for it in '98. Folks who aren't even baseball fans remember '98; that's fame. 609 HRs will never look out of place in Cooperstown.
I’m also thinking tonight about all the amazing and talented trans writers I know who don’t have full time staff jobs and how I wish I knew how to change that.
I am reminded again today of the white, gay, male, conservative sportswriter who said to me, on November 9, 2016, "c'mon, how much damage can he do?"
Few are the days that I don't remember that and remind myself that privilege is one hell of a drug.
But the smallest gestures of acceptance across differences have consequences in the lives of others. We can all be very, very good to one another. Sometimes, even when you're sticking to sports, you're doing more than just sticking to sports. Fin/
Today's Rodon snub is just your day ending in -y reminder that the MLB All-Star selection process is still a disjointed dumpster fire of a travesty of a mess.
I'm never going to stop being amazed by otherwise sentient rational beings' capacity to take almost anything else involving meting out discipline and try to make it about Pete Rose.

The Dodgers revealed a lack of sense of purpose as far as observing
#Pride
. If you're listening to politicians & organizations that want to prevent equality under the law for all Americans, you probably also don't know something as basic as: Pride is a protest of that.
12 years ago today, I decided on a whim to expand my OK Cupid search to 500 miles from Chicago. Among all the men & women maybes,
@FayeKennett
in Dayton came up as my top match; I thought "Nah, she'd never..." I got a note from her that night. We started to talk, and here we are.
Delighted beyond words that we're adding
@Marisa_Ingemi

Some news — I’m joining
@SFChronicle
to cover women’s sports, enterprise, and hockey. Will begin writing in June, and I’ll be moving to the Bay Area later this summer. I am super excited to get started and join their sports department!

Just going to note that "handouts to billionaires!?!" going onto the ballot was a nightmare (for the A's) that their partners in Oakland worked hard (and effectively) to avoid at Howard Terminal.
Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher’s effort to relocate his franchise to the Las Vegas Strip is now facing the prospect that it could be put up to Nevada voters.
NEW: World Cup Daily, Day 25. They just don't care. Qatari World Cup organizers don't even hide their apathy over migrant worker deaths, including the most recent one.
To say that this situation is disappointing for fans who invest the most -- time, money & affection -- in the A's would be an understatement. Doing this while also threatening to leave for Las Vegas makes the franchise appear a hostage.
Some folks might think an MLB postseason with no LA or NYC team left would be the worst. For network execs maybe. Tuning out? A mistake. What Indians, Phillies, Padres, even Mariners have given us is great October baseball. If your team's out, root for great games, not laundry.
Repeating the 'd' word w/o noting potential motivations behind its use would be a mistake. That's one party's spin in a news story about a two-party negotiation. One can hope newsrooms will do better than merely repeat it & give it oxygen. Do journalism, not transcription.
'The real story from Day 2 of the Bauer hearing is that [he] punched an unconscious woman, in his own words. He had anal sex with an unconscious woman, by his own admission and his lawyer’s own admission. You can’t legally give consent for those acts.'
The entire thread from
@cmclymer
is worth reading but to my MSM colleagues this is your reminder that NYT's misreporting on Mr. Trump & the GOP platform against
#LGBTQ
Americans in 2016 was & remains a confession of a leading newsroom's inability to cover this subject competently
Political media seem to be suffering en masse from amnesia on this topic. Or perhaps they’re just lazy. Or perhaps they, too, hold anti-LGBTQ beliefs.
When will they do their jobs and stop protecting social conservatives?
This. My frustration is over seeing fans rooting for billionaires to not spend money on their product, rooting for that guy's bottom line while cheating players of earning a fair-market wage? It's still ludicrous.
Made my first trip into 901 today (BART, of course) picked up my
@sfchronicle
ID, inevitably ran into
@peterhartlaub
, grabbed lunch with
@susanslusser
&
@annkillion
, took the ferry home to Oakland, all of which leaves me thinking this is all absolutely, positively lovely.
Irresponsible journalism at outlets ranging from the NYT & The Atlantic on down have had public policy consequences that will harm real people over what adds up to little better than scaremongering. Demand & expect better; all news outlets owe it to all of us on all topics.
Exactly the way
@espn
responded when I asked them about it when they recruited me, although without the suggestion involving a zesty enterprise. Newsrooms, not just sports newsrooms, can do this & benefit from inclusion in the workplace.
@TransJournalist
can be there to help.
My editors supported me after I transitioned, though finding work seemed nearly impossible. Thankfully
@BrianKarem
hired me in the most Brian way possible: "Why the _ would I give a _? Can you do the job?"
Newsrooms aren't all like that though. Groups like TJA need to exist.
I hope that the latest panel of voters acknowledge that Minnie Minoso and Buck O'Neil are Hall of Famers, because they never weren't on the basis of their contributions to the game.
After almost 16 years of being out, I'm here to say transness is still as it always has been: intrinsic to who I am. On
#TransDayOfVisibility
& beyond, treat transfolks with the same basic respect you should expect.
I will leave ESPN just a few days shy of finishing 10 full years there. I am forever in debt to
@david_kull
for his making what was then & today remains an extraordinary choice in a modern American mainstream newsroom: He hired a
#trans
person because he knew I could do the job.
