PhD student in Simons Lab @TU_Muenchen studying membrane biology of myelin 💗#CellBio #microscopy //formerly @ScienceStowers @dartmouth

My first-author paper is out today @NatureComms ! We investigated how oligodendrocytes produce myelin. Using volume EM, we characterized oligodendroglial ER (magenta) in developing myelin and explored nonvesicular lipid transport involved. #lipidtime (1/n)

Aging leads to a decrease in white matter volume and damage to myelinated axons, contributing to neurodegeneration. Myelin breakdown can trigger inflammation, creating a vicious cycle that causes...

@NatureComms However, myelin growth occurs at the innermost layer of myelin wrap-far from and difficult to access from the cell body. This led us to hypothesize that oligodendroglial ER extends into the myelin, allowing lipids to be synthesized locally and delivered directly to myelin (3/n).

@NatureComms As an enthusiast of ER and membrane biology, I find oligodendrocytes fascinating because they are among the human body’s most powerful lipid producers. To generate myelin, each cell must expand its plasma membrane thousands of times. (2/n).
