It's very funny that we struggle to do by-right upzoning anywhere in NYC *EXCEPT* Long Island City Don't get me wrong, I'm glad LIC is the Thousand Year Empire of YIMBYism But it's amusing that we're on our 3rd upzoning here in ~30yrs yet refuse fix other parts of the city
NEW: The OneLIC plan has been approved by the @NYCCouncil Zoning Committee!!! This will bring over 14,000 new homes — including over 4,000 permanently affordable — to a transit-accessible area of Long Island City. This is NYC's largest neighborhood rezoning in decades.

Fair question For decades, Elizabeth Street Garden was a mostly locked VIP club, until NYC tried to reclaim the land — at which point the garden rebranded itself as a public space for propaganda purposes Much of the garden will still be preserved It’s pro-garden & pro-housing!

And that perfectly illustrates why these ballot measures are necessary: the neighborhoods that need affordable housing the most fight tooth and nail to block it, necessitating the need for much larger upzonings elsewhere, which is overwhelming and inequitable.

The land use committee is voting on the OneLIC rezoning, and I think it’s worth pointing out that it WOULD NOT have benefited from props 2/3, as it’s neither a <30% density boost or in a bottom 12 CD In fact, ZERO neighborhood plans since MIH’s creation would’ve been expedited
