20th century global development was defined by technology transfer agreements – formalized transfer of knowledge and machines from advanced economics to developing countries. But today, technology transfer agreements have vanished. My latest article explores why:

Exactly. Beijing’s austere policy is, in effect, doing the world — particularly the United States — a favor by keeping commodity prices, and therefore inflation, in check. I’ve long argued that the true economic nuclear weapon Beijing could deploy to inflict pain on US households

What happens to commodities if China so much as shows a sign of life? Chinese has not mattered for commodities since the pandemic. The growth catalyst shifted from TSF to US fiscal policy. If China (and other non-US economies) so much as put a floor in growth, look out!

Love the idea that NYC is having a "Thai" moment. Lets hope it doesnt have a "Thai" sequel.

The country closest to having a 'Mamdani' moment in recent times must be Thailand. Fed up with conservative political inertia, low growth, and staggering inequality, many youth and in the countryside opted for the Move Forward Party in 2023. The outcome however was not respected.

When I went into science 35 years ago, I was extremely idealistic. I believed that being a scientist required the highest moral standards, that scientists cared only about advancing human knowledge & benefiting humanity, & made sacrifices for it. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Yes. I learned early in graduate school that scientists aren’t operating at any higher moral standard than anyone else. Some were outright nasty - and over the years I met some of the worst people imaginable, all parading as valiant defenders of science. Once I learned that, it

The decline of public property: in recent decades, the public share of total assets has declined. Net public assets (i.e., assets minus liabilities) in major European countries have fallen to just above zero (from 20-30% in 1978), while private assets have risen to >6 times GDP.

A timely and well-worth study. From an anthropological perspective, Hill Gates (1988) made similar observations of Taiwan on the essential role of the Vietnam War to its economic development.

What were the causes of South Korea's export miracle? My new paper w @philippbarteska, @straightedge, @seung_econ explores a major overlooked factor: U.S. military procurement during the Vietnam War. We bring new evidence to the Q of how geopolitics shapes development. 🧵:

Far from a debunker of classical nationalism, Benedict Anderson was its advocate, presciently fearful that mass migration and communications technology would weaken the nation-state’s assimilatory power, fuelling today’s “ethnicisation” process:

Vietnam just agreed to jointly explore a railway connectivity project with Russia, Mongolia, and China. An unimaginable embrace of an ‘Eurasia’ outlook. Before 2022, many in Vietnam’s political elite were deeply & emotionally invested in the US-led rules-based order & Trump.

A huge difference in how the Xi-Trump meetings & the Sino-US split is commented on Vietnamese social media lately. Since ‘liberation day’: less fanfare for Trump, greater support for a multi-polar world order. Without any doubt, Trump 2.0 is souring public sentiments in Vietnam.

Briefly on Vietnam for @peacc: “Trump’s latest tariff war has even been regarded by some Vietnamese as an opportunity for “liberation” from China. Since 2020, the broader trend has nevertheless been that of rising red nationalism throughout society.”
