My letter with @ReadReadj and @PloederlM has now been published in JAMA Psychiatry. We comment on the meta-analysis by Kalfas et al, which concluded that withdrawal reactions from antidepressants are rare and transient and thus of no clinical relevance. https://t.co/Fd0ra2E6A9

Psych-diagnosis is what we call in anthropology an 'initiation ritual' into a very different social status: one where new authorities & practices can now exert power where they had no jurisdiction before, & where a new story of you is written to legitimise this arrangement.

Sounds like a perfect description of the extremist bio-genetic “medical model” ideology of drug companies, and too many psychiatrists, that you are so quick to defend.

Interesting, worthwhile study but not test of 'gradual, hyperbolic tapering' as authors suggest - largely linear taper over 4 months, stopping sometimes at 50% receptor occupancy of max dose. Clear evidence of withdrawal effects

Dutch FEP study shows people allocated to antipsychotic reduction had higher risk of relapse early on, but better functioning (on one measure) compared to people on maintenance at 3-4yr follow-up. No difference in antipsychotic dose at follow-up 1/2

Finally, after 21 years, an expression of concern has been issued for the publication of Study 329 by the journal where it appeared. https://t.co/C8x9wE7MIj If you haven't heard about this scandalous study, see here:

Congratulations psychiatry, you’ve done it again. All the raver kids are walking around with watermelon and berry flavored ketamine nasal bottles. I have seen at least 30 people with them today alone at a music festival. One told me it helps with his depression.

Extremely common response. Doctors are not well informed about possible effects of disrupting serotonin signalling and so conclude person must be crackers. Then these same doctors report that they don't see withdrawal. See most posts from Drs on X.

Just got a message from someone who said she went to a neurologist for her SSRI withdrawal symptoms and was told it was psychosomatic, that she needs her full dose of Zoloft, and prescribed her Xanax. It’s giving “I don’t know how to be a doctor” DO BETTER. #doctor #ssri

For a professional to label another person's grief 'pathological' is the height of ideological arrogance. I say 'ideological' as there's no objective science to support this heartless ascription. The label is clinically valueless. Who'd argue for this..? https://t.co/rtDdEaLazI

A brilliant blog that not only dismantles MAHA’s arguments, but also exposes how some leading psychiatrists, in their own way, are just as biased & prone to fear-mongering (albeit in the opposite direction), often spreading, defensively, unscientific claims & misinformation👇

Conversely... deep self-examination & scrutiny can lead to hightened socio-political awareness & to committed political action & engagement (think J. Herman, Fromm etc). We must also be wary of how some therapies crudely strip nearly all psych-distress of any political dimension.

What the ideological left & right have in common is intolerance of real psychotherapy aimed at self-examination and self-awareness Both want to erase it/substitute something created in their own image Because ideology rarely survives honest self-reflection & deep self-knowledge

Robert Howard is running for president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. This is upsetting for many people, as he has not been a friend of the prescribed-harm community, & has actively hurt & offended many patients with his online behaviour & denial of withdrawal harms.

Since 1995, antidepressants have driven nearly $200 Billion in global revenue for Pharma. Yet during that period, rates of poor mental health & disability have significantly worsened; especially in regions where ADs are heavily prescribed. Make of that correlation what you will.
