Government needs to show some leadership, recognise that it's simplistic approach is flawed and sit down with the National Farmers Union to devise an approach that protects real farmers but not land investors.
If @RachelReevesMP turned around and said IHT will not apply to resident farmers, ie those who live on the farm and whose home it is, this would all go away. That is a far fairer way than an arbitrary £ cap which doesn’t reflect land values in many parts of the country.

New Defra stats out. The average lowland grazed farm made £17,300 last year. Hardly the level of profit required to pay a death tax which might stretch into many £100,000s - without being forced to liquidate the farm itself. https://t.co/1Hh6aC07I4

It takes a big person to admit a mistake. It takes a bigger person to apologize... But will @RachelReevesMP @Keir_Starmer do that or just ignore all the other around them ?

The second fallacy being promoted is that farmers could have planned for something that not only has not been flagged, but which the government had very specifically said it was not going to do 5/n

Great visit to Maidenhead’s Berkshire Agricultural College with @JoshReynoldsSL6 today. The Government's budget risks creating a lost generation of farmers with damaging changes to inheritance tax and cuts to DEFRA's food and farming budget.

@JoshReynoldsSL6 After years of being taken for granted by the Conservative Party, rural communities should have been properly supported in this Budget. The Chancellor now needs to listen, reverse these measures and ensure the next generation of farmers is protected.

A fab time yesterday with @PhilipArdagh at Shebbear Primary School. We were so pleased to use our councillor grant funding to support @AppledoreBkFest’s School’s week, with fantastic sessions in our local schools and a free signed book for every child 📚👌🏼 🤩
