@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman Sex differences were minimal, with only 4 genes showing sex-specific differential expression post-exercise! For sex-specific enriched pathways, small differences in the cell type proportions between biopsies from men & women at specific time points likely played a role. 🧡 8/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman Our findings further question the longstanding dogma that proposes a direct relationship between exercise-induced increases in mRNA levels and subsequent changes in the abundance of the proteins they encode (. 🧡 7/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman Despite previous research showing most mitochondrial proteins increase following training, nearly half of all mitochondrial genes, including those involved in oxidative phosphorylation, were characterised only by downregulation, particularly at 24 & 48 h post-exercise. 🧡 6/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman Consistent with a dampening of the transcriptomic response to exercise with a higher fitness, the differential expression of many genes, including those that encode mitochondrial and ribosomal proteins, correlated to VO2max (particularly at 24 & 48 h post-exercise). 🧡 5/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman Despite a common focus on the first 3 h post-exercise, thousands of genes were not DE until 24 and 48 h post-exercise and 25% of all differentially expressed genes were either upregulated or downregulated relative to baseline depending on the time point investigated. 🧡 4/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman In response to exercise, 16,625 genes were differentially expressed (DE) versus baseline, incl >7,000 genes not previously identified. This larger number of DE genes is primarily attributable to the greater sampling of time points, rather than the increased sample size. 🧡 3/9

@DaleFTaylor @LizReisman @bluebirdi @Romain_Barres @NolanJHoffman To investigate exercise-induced transcriptomic changes, 20 young men & 20 women completed a single high-intensity interval exercise session. Muscle biopsies were taken prior to, in the middle of, immediately post, and 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, & 48 h post-ex (9 biopsies in total!). 🧡 2/9

I like how this review by Simeon P. Cairns highlights that even the experts have disagreed on the effects of 'lactic acidosis' on fatigue & performance.
