I've accepted a journalism fellowship with
@AHCJ
and
@commonwealthfnd
to report on how first-trimester abortion limits differ in the US & France.
It's an important topic-- especially with the election next year-- and I'm excited to dig in!
Hi, I’m back to work after taking a few days to recover from a COVID-19 breakthrough case!
Vaccines are amazing. Would not have wanted to experience this virus without that antibody protection.
But these so-called mild breakthrough cases are not fun. Tbh I learned a lot 1/
Just watched 4 DC metropolitan police escort an old man in full Nats apparel out of
@Nationals
park because he didn’t have his mask over his nose while sitting in his (outdoor, distanced) seat.
There has to be a better way.
HHS
@SecBecerra
has tested positive for COVID-19 again, the agency just announced. Last time he tested positive was May 18, after attending the G-7 Summit.
DC is gathering some interesting data on breakthrough cases.
A contact tracer asked me where I got my vaccines, what kind and what batch number. Why? They are trying to find patterns w clusters of breakthroughs (i.e poor storage at a CVS, a bad batch of Pfizer vaccines etc.) 3/
The more virus circulating in your area, the more likely you’ll get a breakthrough.
My husband and I both had breakthroughs & I could rattle off a list of vaxxed friends/ family who have recently tested positive.
None of them have been hospitalized—thank you, vaccines. 5/
New story:
CIVRAC-EN-MEDOC, France — Former Rep. Jim McDermott is the rare lawmaker who has been able to live out all the policies he worked for during his decades in Washington.
He just had to move to another country to do it.
On a press call I asked
@SecBecerra
if he believed it was possible to end the monkeypox outbreak or if the virus would become endemic.
He replied: "Well, I almost turn that question back to you, Ariel and asked, how many vaccines do you think we need at this stage?"
...
Many people who work on Capitol Hill have disabilities, both hidden and apparent. Many people who work on Capitol Hill have had strokes.
Reasonable accommodations are nothing new.
It takes too long to get test results back!
It took DC 5 days to return my test. It was impossible to find a rapid test in my area. I only learned I had covid early on thx to
@JessieHellman
& a rapid test she pocketed at the Amsterdam airport.
Things should be easier!! 2/
My August recess project: get Blanche adopted!
This adorable 3 y/o beagle is one of the thousands of pups rescued from the Envigo medical research facility in Virginia. She’s healthy, a big bundle of love and ready to go home with her forever fam!!

Mild breakthrough cases are not always all that mild. They can disrupt your life.
My body (still!) constantly feels like I’ve just finished a very shitty long run, even though I’ve spent the day on the sofa. Taking the dog around the block leaves me breathless. 4/
A bunch of
@Nationals
got the J&J vaccine today. They have a game tomorrow at 7:45. If you know anything about the vaccine side effects you know tomorrow is...gonna be a rough game.
Becerra was just in LA for the Summit of the Americas. Canadian PM
@JustinTrudeau
also just tested positive for COVID-19 after coming home fro the summit
👋Greetings from Versailles, France where the French parliament is voting to enshrine abortion access in their constitution.
French lawmakers say the vote is a direct response to what’s happening in the United States
I’ll be reporting here all day so follow along
So here's the real issue —> "The big concern is that the next variant that might emerge, just a few mutations potentially away, could potentially invade our vaccine,"

The
@acog
now recommends all pregnant women get the COVID-19 vaccine.
"Pregnant individuals who have decided to wait until after delivery to be vaccinated may be inadvertently exposing themselves to an increased risk of severe illness or death
CDC vaccine advisers vote 14-0 to recommend use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11.
If/when
@CDCDirector
signs off on the recs, kids can start getting the shot.
The WH is saying the COVID-19 vaccine equity gap is closing.
70% of black adults, 71% of white adults and 73% of hispanic adults have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
This is a big improvement from May when there was a 9 pt gap between white and black adults
CDC advisers will meet Nov. 2-3 to discuss the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages 5-11
No Halloween vaccine...but it could potentially be on the market in time for Thanksgiving gatherings
This is week 2 without a White House COVID-19 press briefing!! Would be helpful to hear about:
- backup plans if Congress doesn't pass COVID $ in time
- BA.2 wave
- plans for boosters for older adults
- where things stand w vaccines for kids
etc etc etc etc etc
"If we would of just let it rip it's likely another million people would of died," Fauci tells lawmakers when asked what would have happened if the US took no COVID-19 precautions
me: listening to a conference call on speaker about state hospital capacity and COVID-19
my spouse: "wow, this is so depressing! you report on this every day?"
me: .........
Alternate title: eating cheese with the former Ethics Committee Chairman.
For real, this was a very cool assignment
@rollcall
. McDermott had some interesting insights on the current political landscape & stories about birthing baby goats in the French countryside.
The coolest dateline I’ll ever have…
VERSAILLES, France— French lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to codify abortion access in their constitution Monday — a move directly inspired by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
New: CDC vaccine advisers unanimously recommend Moderna and Pfizer boosters for all US adults at least 6 months after the primary vaxx series
*all individuals ages 18+ "may" get a booster shot
*all adults ages 50+ "should" get a booster.
"If you're not going to fight COVID-19 at least get out of the way of everyone who is trying," Biden says of states that are banning mask mandates in schools.

WASHINGTON DC-- With over 90 percent of the vote, the journalists of CQ Roll Call formed a union on Wednesday. Their parent company, the tech start-up Fiscal Note, required the newsroom of hill reporters to go to an election, and the election proved elucidating.

@Twitter
declined to verify my account bc the account isn't "notable," but qualifications for "notable" accounts include journalists working for verified news organizations.
This is just to say everything is made up and the points don't matter.
The White House tells reporters the FDA will soon make an announcement about how the US can import more any formula from abroad.
WH officials also did not ruling out using the Defense Production Act to ramp up production of formula.
Genuinely disheartening to see a person with "reporter" in their twitter bio doxx staffers, take sides, do generally unethical things.
Hurts the whole profession.
A federal judge blocked the Texas six-week abortion ban
"this court will not sanction one more day of this offensive deprivation of such an important right," the judge writes in the opinion.
Got a COVID-19 test Saturday at noon. Just asked
@_DCHealth
about the status of the test and results are still "pending" 5 days later.
This is not an efficient system during a pandemic.
Psyched to be spending my Labor Day weekend/ Rosh Hashanah in quarantine!!! My husband has a breakthrough case of COVID-19. We live in a small space and both WFH.
Meet the first ever mascot United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Service Mascot, Abigal!!

The New York Department of Health has identified a case of polio in Rockland County.
Last case of polio brought into the US was in 1993. The case originating in the US was 1979.
Today marks 2 years since my first day at CQ Roll Call! I like it here!
I'm v lucky to work with such talented colleagues, a group of happy nerds who have taught me so much and make tough work fun
He is experiencing mild symptoms and will work from home. This is the first time the 81-year-old has tested positive for the virus.
A reminder that
@SecBecerra
also has COVID-19 right now
Relatively new tone from Fauci today talking about breakthrough infections.
"You will always see breakthrough infections regardless of the effectiveness of your vaccine" BUT "even if a vaccine fails to protect against infection it protects against severe disease."
Last night I went out to dinner for the first time since March 2020. Accidentally told the waiter I loved them. More than once. This is gonna be harder than I thought...
NEW-- Every senate Senate Democrat (except Joe Minchin) and 203 of 213 House Democrats urged the Supreme Court to block a federal ban on the abortion drug mifepristone.

Capitol Hill's unqiue pet policy has been a saving grace for many during stressful times. Meet some of the fluffy paw-licy pups who keep the government going:
Hard to believe the US Olympic team has a lower COVID-19 vaccination rate than the average for the entire Olympic Village, especially considering how early US athletes had access to the shot.
