I'm very excited about @Portantino's #SB691, which will require early screening and intervention for children at risk of dyslexia-- something already required in 40 other states! I urge my reps @SenMariaEDurazo and @asmcarrillo to vote YES on SB 691.

JUST IN: @CADeptEd⁩ will release results of last spring’s statewide tests in October. The pledge (on @KPCC’s @AirTalk) comes in the wake of an ⁦@EdSource⁩ report that raised possibility the results might not come out until after the election.

“This is… a major test for the state’s Public Records Act, which allows public agencies to withhold information only under extreme circumstances. If records can be withheld for obvious political purposes in this case, the PRA might as well be junked entirely.”.

Thank you for covering this and investigating! Where’s the @latimes? @sdut? @sfchronicle? Any elected leaders curious about what’s going on? @Portantino? @laurafriedman43? Is anyone still concerned about CA student performance or is it just EdSource now? Exasperated!.

Is CA school super @TonyThurmond & @CADeptEd holding back statewide test results in an election year? First Amendment lawyers say the legal citings for denying access under records law is badly flawed. @Jfenster & I report. @edSource pushes for release.

I say disturbing because I guess it’s just frustrating if people are making bad arguments because those feel rhetorically powerful or are the best ones they have— but it’s disturbing if they aren’t able to see how they’re entirely missing the substance of the disagreement.

The discussion around loan forgiveness is a particularly striking example of a disturbing trend: I can’t tell if people genuinely don’t understand those who disagree with them, or if they’re just happy making flimsy arguments that don’t engage at all with the disagreement.

Just wanted to note for the record: I was able to have a conversation with a field rep for @nithyavraman yesterday and I am very grateful she took the time!.

Woah. Haven't received an email from NOM in like 10 years-- also been a while since the phrase "avowed lesbian" has hit my inbox. Can't believe Brian Brown is still at it. Takes me back to my internship @freedomtomarry. Thank goodness I know @evanwolfson is still at it, too!

I know it's silly to air this all here, but there's a tad more to it than poor constituent services: LA is experiencing many crises and it's hard not to feel utterly hopeless about what you can do about it when you can't even successfully engage with your local elected official.

I read an @latimes article on June 14 about a vote @nithyavraman had taken that troubled me. I am trying to be more proactive about challenges facing my community so I reached out to her office asking for more information and expressing my concern. This is what followed. .

Can anyone help me get in touch with Councilmember @NithyavRaman (@nithyavraman)? I'm a constituent that is embarrassed to have to make a public Twitter plea like a disgruntled airline customer, but my prior attempts have failed so I am a bit desperate. A little backstory. .

The headline doesn’t match the story at all. This is a story of the nearly universal agreement that high crime and homelessness is making it difficult to run safe businesses in LA— including those mere blocks away from City Hall and police HQ! Nobody seriously disputes that.
