This work is now officially out in @SfNJournals where we show that the language representations in the cerebellum seem to be exclusively conceptual semantic information.

There is a growing body of research demonstrating that the cerebellum is involved in language understanding. Early theories assumed that the cerebellum is involved in low-level language processing....

Excited to share this work from @AmandaLeBel3 on a detailed breakdown of language representations in the cerebellum! Take-away 1: it represents language! But data are consistent with cerebellum ONLY representing the HIGHEST-LEVEL, MOST CONCEPTUAL aspects of language.

I don’t think I’ve ever stayed up til 2 am multiple nights in a row to just excitedly discuss all of the interesting perspectives and opinions from a conference before. Thanks so much to all of the organizers!.

If JT’s mentorship of undergraduate students and his peers is indicative of his potential as a PI, then his future graduate students are going to be really lucky to work with him.

And thanks again to @aniladmello for inviting me to help write this and hopefully heres to more collaborations figuring out what exactly the cerebellum is doing.

I am really excited in how functional cerebellar work can integrate some of the current research on variability in the cerebellar cellular circuit to come up with better models on what exactly the cerebellum is doing in these cognitive tasks like language.

so I want to also shout out my favorite recent cerebellar paper from @SI_plasticity showing that the cerebellar circuit is not nearly as uniform as previously thought particularly in humans

Multibranched dendrites are common in humans and in a mouse Purkinje cell population drive diverse input patterns and signal complexity.

All this suggesting that the cerebellum is likely active and necessary for proper language function. But! there are still a ton of open questions like what about low level auditory processing? or what computation could the cerebellum be doing?.

This result is also supported by connectivity models which show that there is a strong connectivity between the cognitive cerebellum and language cortical areas. For example in this recent dMRI paper by @KatieJobson1

Recent MRI research (including my own) has shown that as you move up the language hierarchy from low-level sensory to high level semantic and pragmatics the cerebellum becomes *more* involved.
