Today is my first as department chair at @Berkeley_EECS When I left Harvard 6 yrs ago, I just saw it as moving from one great place to another. Then, it hit me at a state school I'm also now a public servant, and that fact weighs on me every day. I aim to serve the best I can.

Can a smartphone detect signs of a stroke? Ashmita Kumar, a UC Berkeley EECS student, created Code Blue—a startup that uses AI and everyday devices to detect early stroke symptoms and call for help, potentially saving lives. https://t.co/PhIrV0CI1n

In the 1995 film Hackers, Angelina Jolie’s character uttered these “prophetic” words: “RISC architecture is gonna change everything.” David Patterson, CS professor emeritus and inventor of RISC, explains how those words may hold true today.

“RISC architecture is gonna change everything.” Those absurdly geeky, incredibly prophetic words were spoken 30 years ago. Today, they’re somehow truer than ever.

Gary Guthart (CEO of @IntuitiveSurg) and I propose the phrase “Augmented Dexterity” to describe systems where surgical subtasks are controlled by a robot under the close supervision of a human surgeon (vs. "supervised autonomy" which can be intimidating). Go Bears! @UCBerkeley
In a new @SciRobotics paper, @Ken_Goldberg describes how advances in #GenerativeAI could enable robots to assist human surgeons with tasks that require significant dexterity like suturing. (CC: @Berkeley_EECS, @Cal_Engineer, @BerkeleyIEOR) https://t.co/20ggvppaRc
