Dec. twentyTHIRD in Tucson—confused wildflowers and late fall color in the desert canyons…and a new record high for today: 84°, after yesterday’s new record of 85° (pleasant…but also alarming) https://t.co/vU6rzJ6PLM

In 2–3 years, there will be no way to tell what’s real and what’s not… and I have no idea how humanity will deal with this enormous problem.

…& he could say this precisely because he knew so many “facts” and which ones he needed to keep in his head… It’s exhausting, as a teacher, to see people take Einstein out of context in order to justify sub-par education; we all need facts AND imagination, ‘stuff’ AND thought!
Albert Einstein in response to not knowing the speed of sound. "I do not carry such information in my mind since it is readily available in books. ...The value of a college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think."

This needs nuance and flexibility, but…YES!!!!!!
It's time to remove laptops from classrooms. 24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distracted—writing enables deeper processing and more images. The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

Social psychologist @JonHaidt: We’re getting young men addicted to video games, porn, gambling, investing, vaping—and then act surprised that they’re not transitioning into adulthood. It was “open season on their dopamine systems—and it was hugely lucrative.”

This needs nuance, but the uncomfortable truth must be faced… AND if tech truly cared about education instead of just profit, there COULD be a way to have carefully-designed and pedagogically-restricted ‘good’ devices…but that is NOT what we have now
“Although it once seemed like a good idea to give every child his or her own device, it’s clear that those policies have been a failure.” 💯 School-issued laptops distract students at school and home, expose them to things they shouldn’t see, and hurt learning. 🧵

Impossible to understand our moment in history without grasping that for many people reality is increasingly a marginal phenomenon that happens around the edges of screen time.

I think there is a limit to what you can learn through a screen. Even well made documentaries are much closer to entertainment than education. But if you look at the utterly mindless stuff people are watching on their phones it's horrifying. We need a social taboo against slop
@j_amesmarriott So depressing, although it’s the content that’s the problem rather than the medium, isn’t it? If everyone was watching eight hours of opera or history documentaries every day, it’d be less of a problem, but it’s all social media slop.
