Made a last second decision to grab my camera and head to Letchworth tonight on a hunch. I'm sure glad I did. That's the Milky Way seen over the Upper Falls, captured on a 15 second exposure.
That is one scary eye. Measuring about 20 miles wide, the eye of CAT 4 Hurricane
#Laura
features mesovortices rotating within the eye itself. This phenomenon is typically reserved for particularly intense hurricanes.
For weather geeks, this is simply incredible. The GFS drops the pressure of our incoming storm down to 959 mb. The Euro is similar at 961 mb. For perspective, pressure that low is on par with what we'd expect with a CAT 3 hurricane. This thing means business.
GFS model casually throwing out 30"+ of snow for the Buffalo area late week into the weekend. Still far too early to get overly detailed and specific. But the setup certainly appears favorable for the potential of FEET of snow downwind of Lake Erie.
LIFE UPDATE: Hard to believe we're approaching 4 years since Katie, Bolt & I arrived in Rochester. That marks the end of my contract at News 8. Somehow, I convinced them to sign me to a new contract. Sorry, Rochester. You're stuck with us!
I’ve been off-air the last few days following a surprise aggressive brain cancer diagnosis for my dad. I’m happy to report he came through surgery today without major issue. There’s a long road ahead, but today was a good day. If you are so inclined, I ask for your prayers.
In 2018, there were 10
#tornado
deaths across the entire United States. Today in Lee county, 14 people lost their life. There were more fatalities in Lee county in one day than the whole country in one year.
For those so inclined, please keep our family in your prayers. Some of you are aware, some not, my father is at the end of his brain cancer battle. Our family is gathered in Ohio to be together with him which will keep me off TV for a bit. Hope to see you again soon!
WROC has hired a new evening producer for our 6 & 11 pm newscasts. Her name is Katie Snitil.
My wife will now have complete control of my weathercasts AND the ability to talk to me through my earpiece. Please pray for me.
Orchard Park is fast approaching 50" of snow in less than 24 hours. For most people, it's nearly impossible to grasp just how much snow that is. Big thanks to 6' 5" Josh Allen for helping us put that number in perspective.

Orchard Park has been upgraded to a Lake Effect Snow Warning, set to kick in Friday night & run through the weekend. A narrow but intense plume of accumulation could yield more than a foot of snow where squalls persist. Welcome to WNY,

If you live along the east coast, chances are you're under some headline courtesy of

. Tropical Storm Warnings run from Charleston to Boston. Even Maine is under a Tropical Storm Watch.
WHO REMEMBERS? On this date in 1991, Rochester meteorologists were gearing up for what would be our "Ice Storm of the Century". The storm would start the following day, March 3, and would knock out power for days and weeks for many. The city alone lost more than 10,000 trees.
This isn’t a timelapse. This is real-time, nonstop lightning looking east out over Lake Ontario. The cloud to cloud strikes are as relentless as I’ve ever seen.
Mark your calendar. Rochester's next total solar eclipse is October 26, 2144. I'm currently planning on setting up somewhere around Batavia, weather permitting.
Lake Ontario can do some wild things. Check out the giant cliffs in the distance looking toward Greece from Webster. Just one problem-there are no giant cliffs in Greece. This is a mirage, an optical illusion resulting from the large temperature difference between water and air.
Let's pretend Orchard Park receives 50" of snow by Sunday. Not a forecast, by the way. Just for fun. What would that look like? The view varies depending on which
#Bills
player you're talking about. Spencer & Josh, no problem. Where's Devin? Has anyone seen Devin?
#BillsMafia
We've littered social media with eclipse content over these last few weeks. Trust me, I'll be posting more. If you read nothing else, read this-
ENJOY THE MOMENT.
It's estimated only 1 in 10,000 people experience a total solar eclipse in their lifetime. That's 0.01%. For those…
Last one before calling it a night.

was treated to a wonderful display & I'm excited to hear so many of you were able to see the show, some for the first time. Rochester sure is a beautiful place!
Proud husband moment tonight. Earlier this year, Katie took on a producer role at WROC. She worked the 6 and 11pm newscasts alongside me. Today, she was promoted to Executive Producer. It’s a big role, but one I know she’ll excel in. Way to go, Katie!
GOOD NEWS! Rochester's sunset crosses the 5:30 pm threshold tonight. We're less than 4 weeks away from 6pm and about 5 weeks away from the time change that will jump our sunsets to post-7pm. Woohoo!
It is with a heavy heart I announce my time at WSFA is coming to an end. In a few weeks, Katie, Bolt and I will move to Rochester, New York. I'll serve as the Chief Meteorologist at WROC. More to come!
After a relatively long and hard-fought battle with glioblastoma, my father passed away this morning. Thank you for all your support during this tough time.
I'll be offline for a bit as I join family to grieve and celebrate the life of a wonderful man. See you all next week.
We did it! Rochester has officially broken the 80 degree mark for the first time in 2022! This is the warmest it’s been since September 20 of last year.
Want some good news for your Twitter feed? After gaining only small chunks of daylight for the last few weeks, we are now gaining more than 2 minutes of daylight EACH DAY: That amounts to 15 minutes a week and more than 1 hour in the next month!
My first 3 months in Rochester are in the books. My favorite things so far (in no particular order):
1. How kind & welcoming people have been to Katie & I
2. Wegmans
3. The people I work with at WROC
4. Wegmans
5. Snow (Bolt agrees with this too)
6. Wegmans
I want to be clear on a big point. You're going to see a ton of snow-related content on social media in the coming days. Closings, cancellations, crazy snow maps. This is NOT Rochester's storm. There will NOT be big travel problems around Rochester. This is a west side story.
On this day 5 years ago, Katie & I said "I do" on a sunny morning in Millbrook, Alabama. We're celebrating our 5 year anniversary with a lovely Red Lobster delivery dinner & a howling husky. Wouldn't have it any other way! Love you, Katie!
BREAKING: After 13 days (more than 300 consecutive hours below freezing), it appears Rochester has briefly touched 32 degrees. Please celebrate accordingly.
Today marks 2 years since we packed up our lives and started our new adventure in Rochester. Two of the three pictured below are currently working at News 8. The third is an honorary weather dog. Thank you for welcoming us to this community & into your homes every night.
I’m running out of fingers, next year I’ll have to use my thumb. Can’t believe it’s now been 4 years at WROC. Thank you WNY for accepting me into your homes and trusting us with your forecast. Looking forward to counting the years with my other hand for awhile longer!
Passing through Cleveland this weekend, Bolt and I got a chance to say hello to Dad. A temporary wooden cross has now been replaced by his permanent headstone. They did a beautiful job, he’d be proud.
A big thank you goes out to crews who are braving the cold tonight to restore power. Not a fun or easy job, especially right before Christmas. Thank you for what you do.
FYI, the only person who has the true power to cancel schools on Friday is
@scotthetsko
, but you have to send him an email first. You can email him at sehetsko

.com. Please use the subject line "Eric says hi".
How about some good news to fill your Twitter feed? Tonight's sunset in Rochester is 4:35pm. From here, we start slowly gaining seconds & eventually minutes in the sunset department. By the end of the month, we'll have gained 10 minutes with sunset time at 4:45pm on December 31.
Want a reason to smile? Tonight's 4:35pm sunset is as early as it gets in Rochester. Starting next week, our sunset time starts creeping later and later. Daylight as a whole starts increasing again in less than 2 weeks. Our darkest days are almost behind us!
Want to smile? Rochester's sunset will cross the 6pm threshold next week (Wednesday). We're only about two weeks away from 7pm sunsets with the upcoming time change. Let there be light!
I know this is Adam's thing, but he graciously gave me the time tonight. Going to miss my father tremendously, but the future is bright for glioblastoma patients. If you are so inclined, you can donate in my dad's memory at the link below.
For your entertainment, I present the new HRRR model snowfall through noon Saturday using a 10:1 ratio (10" of snow for every 1" of liquid). Large scale thinking remains consistent. Several feet of snow in persistent bands. But man, this model is bananas.

This time 3 years ago (time flies) I was finalizing flight arrangements to interview at News 8. Shortly after, Katie, Bolt and I packed up a U-Haul and pointed north toward Rochester to begin our adventure. I don’t always make good decisions. Pretty happy with this one :)
SPOTTED! The northern lights came out to dance over Rochester tonight. Lake effect clouds eroded just enough to see the green glow. If you look close, you can see a subtle layer of pink in there, too.
#ROC
HAVE YOU NOTICED? Rochester has already gained 15 minutes in the sunset department since the low in December. Sunset time tonight is 4:50 pm & we're only 10 days away from a 5:00 pm sunset. Brighter days are ahead!
Time flies when you're having fun! Today marks my 1 year anniversary at WROC. Hard to believe it's been a full year since Katie, Bolt & I packed up the U-Haul and headed north from Millbrook, Alabama. Thank you for accepting me into your homes every night. Here's to many more!
On a warm and sunny morning in Millbrook 7 years ago, I said "I do" to my best friend along the banks of the Alabama River. Our current Lake Ontario water is a little colder, but I wouldn't choose anyone else to shiver with. Love you, Katie!
WE DID IT! We have officially made it past the pre-5pm sunset stretch. Tonight’s sunset in Rochester is 5:01pm and getting later. The next time our sun sets before 5:00pm will be November 3, 2024, 292 days from now.
I leave the TV on for Bolt while I’m at work for the 11pm news. When I come on to do the weather, he watches intently. It’s pretty much the most adorable thing in the world.
