The DeSantis 60 minutes piece was one of the more blatant political hatchet jobs in the past couple years and that’s saying something. Selectively editing videos and omitting evidence just to conjure up a predetermined narrative isn’t journalism, it’s tabloid fodder.
Reminder that British Airways and Heathrow airport dropped their mask mandates over a month ago and there was nowhere near this level of meltdown and moralizing about the decision to do so
People mostly just said ok and carried on.Some in US have some strange attachment to masks
French journalist at major outlet confirms the beheading of babies at a kibutz in Israel at the hands of Hamas, saying she has seen images of the atrocities and has cross-checked them, and her colleagues saw the bodies as well.
Horrific
Harvard medical professor says it's time to move on from pandemic:
“It’s time to let the young, healthy and “anyone who wants to move on” from the pandemic do so, said Dr. Stefanos Kales, a professor at Harvard Medical School.”
One of the things I will never not be cynical about is how New York-with an astronomical infection rate and death toll, and with a LTC policy which resulted in an extra 4k+ dead seniors-became hailed as a model for leadership that every state should emulate.
Lost in all the panic/hysteria on twitter are some really important developments coming out of Italy, goving new info on the virus and developing treatment:
1) Patients that are being treated are recovering from the virus in less than 48 hours
The complete obsession that America has for the Supreme Court is largely a product of legislators unwilling to legislate on difficult policy questions themselves and therefore relying on agencies/SCOTUS to make law on their behalf. Unhealthy this.
If I ever become so blinded by partisanship/politics that I actively root for someone’s death from a deadly illness in order to prove a political point, somebody hold an intervention for me.
Come up for air, people.
I really don’t mean to sound glib when I say this, I mean this sincerely.
I feel that some people are going to need some form of grief counseling/therapy to adjust to covid being endemic. The avoid covid *at all costs* mentality for most ppl is objectively not rational.
"That’s actually not factually correct."
@SecAzar
pushes back against
@JakeTapper
's assertion that the U.S. has been particularly devastated by COVID-19.
Azar points to U.S. case fatality rates, which are much lower than several European countries.
And nobody at 60 mins will pay a price for this. Nobody will be forced to apologize, be asked why they selectively edited an interview, or why they omitted key pieces of the vaccine decision. It will just be repeated by other outlets as a statement of fact. Mission accomplished.
I think it’s weird for the WH to call people out for taking PPP loans, which were specifically designed to be forgiven and were doled out in response to governments around the country *forcing* businesses to close due to a pandemic. It’s just not analogous to student loans.
AZ corona update:
The number of people currently hospitalized with coronavirus in AZ is now the lowest it has been since May 28, when the outbreak first started.
Based on current positive rates and number of people now hospitalized, the outbreak is pretty much over
We need clarity on this.
Below citation would suggest that the CDC’s assertion yesterday that they have data showing vaccinated individuals can transmit delta variant due to similar viral load as unvaccinated is partially based off of…a model…using non-US approved vaccines
Look, you don’t have to be some Fauci conspiracy theorist to recognize that Fauci’s utility as a trusted public health official has long since expired, and he tends to be a net negative when it comes to clarity and trust.
Imo, 2012 was actually the most consequential election. Whatever your opinions of Obama were, Romney winning in 2012 would have greatly altered the trajectory of both political parties…
Guys, i swear if I see one more tweet about how “cases are rising in 20 states!!” without any mention on increased testing/what the % positive tests are, I’m going to lose it.
Kristen Urquiza, who lost her father to COVID-19: “My dad was a healthy 65-year-old. His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.”
Good morning! The IHME model being relied upon by WH was updated last night and I wanted to spotlight some of the changes that were made. It's important to remember that models are not oracles, and it's necessary to update them as new data comes in. So here is what changed:
This won’t settle the DeSantis conspiracy theories, but this woman was fired for not following the directions of her superiors (who are scientists, unlike her) and was inputing invalid data. Most people would be fired for this kind insubordination, not just her.
'She's not a data scientist. She's somebody that's got a degree in journalism, communication & geography.'
Gov. DeSantis, asked again about the firing of Rebekah Jones, says she was putting data on the portal that scientists didn't believe was valid.
At the height of the crisis in NYC,NYC did less than 20k tests a day and got 8k new cases
Florida performed 80k tests (4x as many)yesterday and got 9.5k cases.
The NY cases from mid-April are grossly undercounted due to lack of testing and should not be used as a barometer
People saying that Elon expressing a personal opinion on who he wants to win in tomorrow’s elections amount to “election interference” is further sign that the term has lost most of its meaning, and essentially just amounts to “I don’t like this”
The vitriol directed at Dr.Birx is atrocious. She was a physician in the army,is well known for her research related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and has spent much of her career coordinating the global response to it. She also served under both President Obama and President Trump
Israel’s vaccination campaign: “Get the shot, take a shot! 🍾 🍷”
US vaccination campaign: “We will give you strict guidelines of what you can and cannot do once vaccinated despite the vaccines being highly effective at stopping symptomatic illness and transmission.”
Dr. Fauci tells
@AlisynCamerota
he expects the CDC will issue "firm recommendations" on what vaccinated people can do "pretty soon." "I think there will be others coming," he says.
Hysterical/unhelpful quotes like this is why CDC continues to lose credibility
Yes,cases are up in certain parts of country.They also went up in Israel during vax campaign before vaccines became widely available.Message should be get vaccinated,not “impending doom”&”i’m scared”
Last time I say this before I get it tatooed on my forehead, but this statement would be much more accurate if the positivity rate spiked today along with record case increase, instead it fell to a 2 week low, with a record amount of tests being conducted.
15,300 new
#COVID19
cases in Florida today.
A record breaking day for any state, at any point during this pandemic.
No, we have not “stabilized”
@GovRonDeSantis
. No, we are not in a “better place than we were in March.”
Stop making excuses and take action.
#WearADamnMask
.
The daily case chart gets shared a lot, but is misleading. It would imply that the situation now is worse than what was experienced in late March/early April, which isnt true.Testing has increased 6.5x since then.There were likely*way* more than ~30k cases a day back in March/Apr
@AndrewWhitleyVA
Not saying it was coordinated, but they were clearly activists,which was blatant from when photo was first posted.Instead of pumping the breaks, the McAuliffe campaign went out all at once to try and make it a thing. It’s not a good look+they should at least admit they were wrong
To date, Andrew Cuomo has yet to admit he was wrong to make the decision to send infected patients back into nursing homes to start outbreaks there, resulting in thousands dead.
"Reality wins every time."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivers a searing rebuke of Pres. Trump's handling of the COVID-19 outbreak as cases surge across the country. "Admit you were wrong...and we have to start doing something about this."
“In the middle of a pandemic!”*
Which is the main purpose of the WHO, to stop pandemic from happening in the first place. And to at the very least, provide accurate and updated info. It failed catastrophically on both those counts.
BREAKING: Donald Trump announces that he is halting all US funding of the World Health Organisation.
In the middle of a pandemic, that’s a pretty astonishing move.
I think I’m in a fairly small intersection of the covid venn diagram.
Very pro-vaccine (and treatments), increasingly against continued restrictions/NPIs/mandates etc.
“Only 0.02 per cent of students and 0.04 per cent of staff have tested positive in schools that have reopened in the US
Infection rates have been lower than those in the wider community”
Trump does have a penchant for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory sometimes. The Dems were infighting all week between “the squad” and House leadership and Trump goes in there to make some outageous characterization about “the squad” that will serve to rally dems together
COVID is endemic. As a result, cases will continue to rise and fall, as they do with 200+ other viruses every year. Case spikes alone should no longer cause panic and DEFCON 5 reactions. With vaccines widely available, there is currently no rationale for restrictions again.
Overall US:
-# of deaths projected decreased from 93,531 to 81,766
-Projected total bed shortage went from 87,674 to 36,654
-Peak dates(April 15 for resource needed peak, 16th for peak daily death toll) unchanged
-Under 200 deaths a day: Moved from June 3 to May 18
Comes amid a surge in violent crime in DC. Just looking at carjackings alone:
2018: 140 carjackings
2022: 485 carjackings
2023: 651 carjackings (thus far)
It’s completely out of control.
Nowhere in this article does it mention that FL is testing about 3x-5x more people per day than NY did at the height of their crisis. Testing supplies were still low when NY was peaking, thus tens of thousands of cases went unreported.
CORONAVIRUS LATEST: Florida becomes state with second-most confirmed cases, behind California and surpassing New York, which was at one point the state with the highest number of cases.
Cable news has been one of the most destructive forces in our country and is what has made our politics so completely toxic.
Everything on cable news is a life-or-death struggle, and has made politics a form of entertainment.
A whole damn mess.
CNN: "President Trump will be at Mount Rushmore, where he’ll be standing in front of a monument of two slave owners and on land wrestled away from Native Americans.”
In other words, if ur scared of ppl who are unvaccinated that choose not to wear masks, protect urself by getting vaccinated.
If ur vaccinated+are still scared of ppl who are unmasked bc they are possible unvaccinated,this fear is irrational.But youre free to still wear a mask
There is nothing in this article explaining how “no distribution plan” was able to distribute over 35 million doses of vaccine over the last 30 days.
And nothing noting that Fedex, UPS, McKesson have been executing distribution plans in that timeframe to make those deliveries
Great SCOOP from
@mj_lee
on how bad this situation is with vaccine distribution: "There is nothing for us to rework. We are going to have to build everything from scratch," one source said.
Again, I think some people are really underestimating just how much the media’s decision to toss coronavirus aside for the protests undermined any authority they had for shaming people for not social distancing going forward.
The end of this video where Afghanis who helped the United States describe not being able to get through to the airport despite having green cards and all the necessary documents is heartbreaking
It’s easier to slow infections/deaths once over a quarter of your state has had the virus and therefore the virus can’t spread as fast.
Saw this somewhere but it rings true: NY “flattened the curve” the same way a house burnt to the ground extinguished a fire.
This whole Fanni Willis thing is so l brazen. Youre taking on a serious task -prosecuting a fmr POTUS on RICO charges -and you use it as an opportunity to lavish your pillow talk buddy with career opportunities?Trump depravity is constantly saved by the stupidity of his opponents
No big deal, just a cable news host spreading baseless conspiracy theories because he’s upset more people aren’t dying/getting sick in another state.
This is very healthy for our national discourse.
Chrissy lives in a multimillion dollar home in the Hollywood Hills and doesnt have to worry about her business/livelihood getting destroyed by looters. So of course, she donates to encourage looters that are destroying minority owned businesses and she will not suffer bc of it
The Problem With Underestimating How Much People Want to Be Together: When millions of Americans reasonably show that family time is nonnegotiable, it’s time for public health strategy to move beyond “just say no, or else you are a granny killer”.
The purpose of the WHO is presumably to provide accurate and updated information regarding outbreaks, and do everything in their power to prevent a pandemic from occurring.
They failed on both counts, mostly because of their allegiance to the country where outbreak originated
2) Because the majority of the cases are mild and dont require hospitalization, Italy wll only be counting severe cases going forward in an effort to accurately communicate the level of severity/public health risk and cut down on panic.
Something I am extremely not here for:Puff piece of a governor who is governing a state where patients are being intubated w/o sedation,banning the visiting of family members,banning ppl from going to their own property,banning the selling of seeds in grocery stores for no reason
Also, don’t compare raw case totals between states like NY which performed about 25k tests a day during its peak to FL which is performing 70k-100k+ tests per day during its current peak.
I really don’t get why the CDC takes the time to traumatize parents like this.
No other country goes to the lengths to make wild claims like the US and they actually take the time to contextualize statistics.
Just 10mins after polls closed in most of Florida,35% of vote is already reported
This is what processing mail-in ballots upon receipt prior to election day (instead of 8am on election day) gets you.Other states both blue and red do this too
No reason why PA/WI/MI cant do so
Growing concerned that “long-covid” is now being used as a catch-all for indefinitely keeping restrictions in place, almost like a backdoor argument for Zero Covid policies. Worth noting that chronic symptoms are not unique to covid, and exist with other infections (like strept).
Even if Biden wins, I think the electoral implications of this night will be significant. Latinos are defecting to GOP in a big way, and not just in FL, but also in TX. Always seemed like they were a natural GOP constituency(faith, family based etc).Throw socialism arguments in..
FL corona update is out:
There were 15,300 new cases detected yesterday,a new record.
However:This appears to be due to increased testing, almost to a mass-testing scale.The positivity rate fell to 11.25%,which is the lowest in over 2 weeks,with 142k people tested in 24hrs
Age restrictions being lowered again in FL: Governor Ron DeSantis says people 50 years old and older can get the COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday.
He also mentioned hat almost 70% of those 65+ have received at least one dose
@SCOTUSblog
EPA had tried enact a rule to act outside of scope of the Clean Air Act provisions.Congress is free to clarify, and add provisions to Clean Air Act authorizing EPA’s authority to make a rule here
Ppl want the regulatory agencies/SCOTUS to essentially act as a Super Legislature
I don’t think people appreciate how much of an outlier US is in terms of covid battles (on either side of the debate).Ex: Europe has very high vaccination rates, and getting vaccinated is not really political.
They also don’t mask kids, and that’s also uncontroversial
Wuhan reported only about 2,500
#coronavirus
deaths, but 5,000 urns were delivered to one mortuary over just 2 days. “Wuhan has seven other mortuaries.”
@shanghaiist
No. Politicians are threatening to bring back lockdowns, as they’re having a difficult time adjusting to covid as an endemic illness that will experience fluctuations in case rates until the end of time
3) Italian biologists today have isolated the Italian strain of the virus, which will be a big step towards a vaccine and developing new more effectiventreatments.
Article (in Italian) here:
I ❤️ our nation’s senior citizens.
But for the love of god, in a nation of 330 million+ people, can we *please* stop electing senior citizens to high office?
Not that I want a 35 year old as President. But there has to be a solid 45-55 year old somewhere who can do the job.
This is extremely inappropriate. Supposedly non-partisan political analysts need to do a better job of keeping their own personal emotions in check when their preferred candidate is in danger of losing. If they can’t, they should not be offering their political analysis

This is extremely concerning info from the head of CDC.I think way too many people are overlooking the mental/societal costs of school closures and arent considering whether or not they outweigh the risks. I dont think this is sustainable for another year
CDC re school closures, particularly high schools: "We're seeing, sadly, far greater suicides now than we are deaths from COVID. We're seeing far greater deaths from drug overdose that are above excess, that we had as background, than we are seeing deaths from COVID."
“His only preexisting condition was trusting donald trump”
What a way to remember your father and to use his death as a complete non-sequitur. People who voted for and trusted Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio also died. Do their family members get a speech?
Friendly reminder that the argument from some that we need to “stop the spread” in order to stop new variants is an argument for permanent restrictions since covid is endemic and will always be transmitting.
Shouldn’t the more relevant metric be hospitalizations?
Cases will always be present but the reason why we have restrictions in place is because of fears the healthcare system would become overwhelmed.
Glad NY came out on the other side and can return to normal life to some capacity. It was a hellish few months and heartbreaking to watch. But let’s not rewrite history and pretend NY implemented anything particularly unique to slow the spread and end the crisis.
Disappointing to see that hosts with a major platform express skepticism in the vaccine’s ability to protect from severe illness,despite all the evidence we have that shows it does
Hoping
@ABC
can provide the hosts and viewers resources on vaccine efficacy to increase confidence

Great news out of Texas, which has now been reopened for almost 4 weeks.
There can be a safe and practical way for states to reopen with appropriate restrictions and medications.
Today Texas had the fewest

fatalities since the end of March.
We also had the fewest COVID hospitalizations since the middle of April.
And, we have the 2nd most recoveries from COVID in America.

“He developed mild symptoms on Nov. 22, was tested on Nov. 24, and no longer has symptoms.”
Another example of continued protection against severe illness.
I really don’t understand this obsession with Ron DeSantis’s coronavirus strategy. His strategy is not super different from other governors across the country and Florida seems to be going in the right direction
It is not a personal failure to contract a highly contagious respiratory illness
Deeply personal emotions towards a virus that spreads passively and “anger” towards people for not adopting futile mitigation measures (surgical masking) is extremely odd and not well adjusted
I wear a mask everywhere. I social distance. I am so careful to protect others.I don’t go out to eat, I exercise outside, eat healthy.. take care of my mental health..but I am in a school and it is futile. And I have a fever 102.1 and positive test. I am upset and angry.
I’m not even a Trump stan by any stretch of the mind.
But it’s so crazy to say this given that the Trump admin put in an organization (Operation Warp Speed) that has delivered almost 3 vaccines in under a year and used whatever they had to scale up trials and manufacturing
BIDEN: "My predecessor, to be blunt about it, did not do his job in getting ready for the massive challenge of vaccinating hundreds of millions Americans."
Will low-income families (who are disproportionately impacted by public school closures) be able to vacation in Puerto Rico during this period of “remote learning”? Asking for a friend
