Rob Reiner responded with grace and compassion to Charlie's assassination. This video makes it all the more painful to hear of he and his wife's tragic end. May God be close to the broken hearted in this terrible story.

They think that everybody else has their own political cult that spends its time obsessing over Trump.

Ever heard of the Christmas tree tax? There is a 15-cent tax, which is part of the federal commodity promotion authority, also known as checkoff programs. It’s time for these programs to go away, says Cato Institute’s @adamnmichel.

Superb piece about Stephen Miller's pathological and factless nativism. Follow all the links too.
@lionel_trolling Miller's arguments are that "Third World" can't assimilate and 1965 immigration act unraveled social cohesion. But it's all absurd. I took it on here. If you want to talk "social cohesion," Trump/Miller are doing more to erode it than immigrants are. https://t.co/4gZhJDLF3B

Exceptionally interesting paper by @SoerenHenn and James Robinson. This paper and the associated broader research program seek to understand African social/political/economic phenomena through the lens of African civilization and culture, rather than through that of the West.
An argument that the political history of Africa is a surprising success story as Africans achieved what they set out to accomplish, from @SoerenHenn and James A. Robinson https://t.co/50lsiBrTDE

It’s so funny to me that Hazony seems to have genuinely believed you could construct an anti-liberal nationalist movement and not have it be chock full of anti-semites. Open the schools!

This guy’s argument amounts to, “You questioned whether somebody was a terrorist. But a real terrorist on the other side of the world committed an attack. That means you were wrong.” You just can’t take them seriously.
@feelsdesperate @AlexNowrasteh This is noted truth teller Alex Nowsrateh a few weeks ago. A bunch of dead Jews yesterday in Sydney who might not agree with what qualifies one to be a terrorist.

@GarettJones I spelled out precisely why I think your approach wrong, you continue to refuse to engage with the specifics. I *think* you are saying we should admit more Indians and fewer Brits than we would based on individual characteristics because Indian culture is particularly good.
@cojobrien @GarettJones @ESchubart @TheCriticMag What he wants to do is effectively to average an unbiased estimator (based on the entire set of available characteristics of the individual) and a biased one (based on national characteristics). That is very different from reducing the variance of the score or whatever.

David French on talking to rightists. You can give them all the stats and figures in the world on how life is now better. Their response is that they dislike men in dresses so want to destroy society. You’re like it can’t be this stupid. But it actually is.

You just spent a day defending lying. I’m not interested in anything else you have to say.
Politics is amoral and the type of politics we have is highly dependent on functional institutional norms. Libertarians are generally selfish and contribute nothing to institutions. Yet somehow when institutions fail (in no small part due to the selfishness and indifference of

“If he gets deported, he’s really dead." Guan Heng risked his life exposing China's Uyghur camps, taking on-the-ground videos that served as evidence for investigators around the world. Now, after fleeing to the US, he's been detained by ICE and is facing deportation to China.

Here’s an actual political refugee who faces persecution by a strategic rival of the US. If returned to China, at a minimum he’d be jailed and tortured. Just as the US welcomed political refugees from the Soviet Bloc during the Cold War, so now it should protect Guan Heng.

The most interesting story I read this month. "Last month, Xu’s ex-girlfriend, Tang Jing, alleged in a post on Weibo that he had 300 children, living across numerous properties in multiple countries." https://t.co/H7cShMGFno

Videogame executive Xu Bo, said to have more than 100 children, and other elites are building mega-families—testing citizenship laws and drawing on nannies, IVF and legal firms set up to help them.
