Great thread, one thing to add to this is go to your county usda agent and ask for the "USGS soil map". It's a map that already has the soil makeup of wherever you're living and you can then research the best crop and management for the soil type. It will look like this.
SOIL
Know your local soil. How do you determine this? Start digging or use a map. Different soils have different attributes that impact their plant growing abilities.
