There's certainly storytelling to this & other aspects of the weapons.
For example;
The weapons from Gehrman's era (Rakuyo, Burial Blade, Saw Cleaver) are fast and nimble.
The weapons from Ludwig's era (Moonlight Swords, Kirkhammer) are big and heavy.

Bloodtinge weapons are Bestinge weapons, all very "out there".

I know I keep harping on about this but Paarl is legit just a crouched Giant Skeleton with some hair & bolt applied.
Concept art for the skeleton beast and skeleton swordsman from the Prepare To Die Edition art book for Dark Souls.
The swordsman uses what resembles a coiled sword. Additionally both enemies are partly shrouded in darkness, reminding me of Nito's own coat.

For damage purposes, Ludwig the Accursed qualifies as a beast, while Ludwig the Holy Blade does not.
This is because after being woken up by the Moonlight Sword, Ludwig is no longer a beast.
