An AI can translate an email, write a cable, or compose a speech. And since diplomacy is so formal, few will probably notice! But what happens 20 years later when the email becomes a high-level informal convo or that speech needs some ad-libs? And where does innovation come from?

But, as he says, this sort of shortcut could really trap the field in the past, and limit the options when facing problems that have historic priors. As someone who worked with young diplomats, I worry about how this will affect that group in particular.

Good to have Dr. Manor thinking big about AI and diplomacy since I think this is a field uniquely structured for it: With large amounts of formal text, highly structured and predictable communications, going to be relatively easy to create a believable AI Diplomat!

Who's got the credibility/authority to make a call here is the real question I guess hahaha

A next election that could, uh, not be too far into the future by the way, considering the results so far? Without a short term policy project to focus on, seems like it could be hard to manage the survival of a coalition to say the least.

Thinking today of GB's Cameron-Clegg coalition from 2010: If I was a party being approached to save the LDP, I would worry about facing backlash in the next election. I think the next government may be formed by whoever stays out of *this* one.
