Here are some photos from last night’s Akita Kanto Festival (秋田竿燈まつり). It’s 1 of the 3 main festivals in the region and features bamboo poles hoisted with candle-lit paper lanterns, all meant to chase away evil spirits .

Growing up in Tokyo I lived 15min from Studio Ghibli. One day I worked up the courage to knock and ask for a tour. They answered, were super confused but let me in, showed me around and even gave me some merch. A few weeks later, I passed by and saw a sign: “not open to public”.
