Congratulations @FullStopAus, our ‘sister’ organisation, on a significant milestone anniversary! Thanks for all your amazing work in support of women in NSW and beyond! @DV_NSW
Tomorrow, 29 October 2024, Full Stop Australia turns 50 years old. On this day in 1974, the Sydney Rape Crisis Centre began operating out of a single room at the Sydney Women’s Liberation House in Glebe.

Agree @YWCACanberra - we can criminalise coercive control well and do it in a staged and measured way with ongoing consultation. The Implementation Taskforce has been a critical part of the process in NSW #DFV #CoerciveControl
⚖️👩⚖️ YWCA Canberra fully supports the announcement today by the Canberra Liberals to criminalise coercive control & increase the education investment to ensure it is structured, targeted & informed and will operate alongside law reform 1/2 https://t.co/SCuoMhQ8SZ

If consent were just a matter of better education, drink spiking wouldn’t exist. Needle spiking wouldn’t exist. Stealthing wouldn’t exist. Education is important, but it’s not the singular solution to a more complex problem.

The Rapid Review made recommendations in this area, including one for an urgent inquiry into the connections between domestic, family and sexual violence and suicide. Cc @SummersAnne
Another case in the UK where a man has been charged with manslaughter (and coercive control) after causing his partner’s suicide. To date no DPP in Australia has charged manslaughter on this basis. https://t.co/yXFrpywDY6

Principles are easy to hold when they’re never put to the test.
Everyone 'believes victims' and 'supports survivors' until the accused is someone they know and love. Then the victim is 'has problems,' 'out for revenge,' or 'the real abuser.' Research has overwhelmingly found that false accusations of abuse by women are rare. Believe women.

Thanks @DrLisaWheildon! It was a real privilege to moderate this discussion and I’m so glad @latrobe put this event on. Big ideas, lots of hope & lots of enthusiasm for practical next steps! #DFSV
Great to hear practical, solid ideas for reducing #DFSV in the short to medium term at this @latrobe Ideas & Society Program event! "We have industries in this country that are profiting from violence against women," says @mike_salter. 'Partnering' isn't enough; regulation is key

“This literally has as the endpoint the lives of women and children. It is a critical conversation.” Experts are raising concerns about the basis & effectiveness of the strategy to prevent #VAW & the way Our Watch has led this work. Me in @SatPaper today

A decade after the establishment of Our Watch, sources say the framework to end gendered violence was based on research that was incomplete and modified for political reasons.

A victim of coercive control being sick or dependent for any reason often brings out some of the nastier elements of abuse by the perpetrator. #CoerciveControl
During my abusive marriage, my husband broke his ankle. While he was on crutches, he spent almost every day on the sofa watching TV and playing video games. He would yell out to me asking for water, or his phone, or snacks, or a meal, and I would go running 🏃♀️. Six months

Today is a significant day in NSW. This is my ‘special mentions’ cork board where the good stuff gets pinned. Pride of place are a few things from 16/11/22 - the day I got to be there when coercive control legislation was enacted. We show respect to victim/survivors when we

The NSW offence of coercive control came into effect today. From today it is a crime to engage in a course of physical and/or non-physical abuse to humiliate, isolate or control an intimate partner. https://t.co/XVgdsIYBXz

We get approached by communities all over Australia at @wcs_001, seeking to help women & kids by starting new crisis accommodation shelters. We’d love to start one this year and we are so close to our EOFY goal! A tax-deductible donation today would help so much:
