Academic admin. Husband & dad. One-time applicant for Chicago Alderman. Love books, history, movies, & architecture. Too online, but not yet terminally online.
PSA: You must apply by 10 p.m. TODAY for the city's Shared Cost Sidewalk Program. It allows residents to split the cost of sidewalk repairs with the city. Apps fill up quickly.
I continue to be baffled at why these numbers look so grim for Biden when he's got a better legislative and administrative record than any single-term President in my life. How has messaging gotten so bad or ineffective all the sudden?
Obviously Lori's judgment was always poor, but I'm a bit baffled as to why NASCAR thought this would be a smart move. I'm sure they'd like to expand, but this just seems like a truly terrible mismatch of product and audience.
He came by again just now and made sure to pause and wave at the kids through the window.
My son turned to me and said "That's so nice! I think his heart grew three sizes."
The oldest living thing in Chicago, a burr oak in the Lincoln Park Zoo that predates the city's founding, has reached the end of its life cycle and will be cut down soon.
The UPS driver who covers our block always plays great music loud enough for everyone to hear, but he takes it up a level at the holidays. He even delivers wearing a Santa beard, corncob pipe, and fake belly.
What a king.
Honestly, this is wrong. Northerly Island is public property and the public should be allowed on it, even if they're just there to listen to distant echoes.
A. Absolutely not, no.
B. The waters of the Great Lakes are controlled by international treaty and both US and Canadian laws bar anyone from just "piping" our water away.
C. There are no pipes that can funnel that amount of water 2500 miles away.
D. Still absolutely now, no.
Absolutely and entirely ludicrous that this wonderful old house, built somewhere around 150 years ago, is on the verge of being torn down.
Obscenely wasteful and decadent.
Much as it pains me to say it, Pritzker's 5 years of bona fides in his office make me think that the Johnson folks are the ones dropping the ball here.
After Gov. J.B. Pritzker said today he was “deeply concerned” about Mayor Brandon Johnson’s pause on new migrant shelters, Johnson’s office releases statement saying state can open sites “at any time it chooses” & Chicago has “carried the entire weight of the new arrival mission”

Honestly, it's sort of shocking that more people don't run for mayor/alder/state rep/governor on a platform of "I will make government services something less than a mysterious black hole of neglect and incompetence."
Aesthetically, it's not for everyone, and it needs a lot of work to function better, but the Thompson Center cannot be demolished.
It would be the city's worst loss of our architectural heritage in half a century.
While we appreciate the public mention of the judges desire for unobstructed lake views,
We respectfully disagree that this wish warrants the $52M demolition of two important landmarks when a high-security adaptive reuse plan is ready to go.
Cribbing from a Hyde Park FB group to show what Harper and 57th looked like before the UChicago-sponsored "urban renewal" demolition of the 50s and 60s.
Hard to even wrap my head around this, tbh.
I can't believe I'd never walked over to see Laredo Taft's Fountain of Time before.
Monumental, gorgeous, and haunting. One of the best works of art in Chicago.
Oh shit, Chuy's transportation plan calls for BRT, a "circle line that links all of CTA’s rail lines and all of Metra’s lines," traffic calming, and a citywide protected bike grid.
"The vibes are off" being a new rule of American politics is just...I dunno how to square that with every other Preaidential election in living memory.
I know I bang this drum with some frequency, but Grant Park is really poorly designed compared to a lot of similarly-situated parks in peer cities. Would be well-worth an overall redesign.
Takes an enormous amount of cruelty or an unimaginable galaxy brain to see the news about childhood poverty plummeting since last year and think "this needs to stop."
NEW: Sen. Manchin has told the White House the child tax credit must include a firm work requirement and family income cap in the $60k range, Axios has learned.
These demands would dramatically weaken one of Biden's signature programs.
I've started to wonder if Biden is faring worse than Obama 12 years ago, despite a better overall picture, because he doesn't have the charisma Obama could use to paper things over.
I remember how awesome the vast scale model of Chicago and its rail connections was, but I hadn't appreciated its attention to details a decade ago.
The Ashland 'L' station! The view down the LaSalle canyon! I love it!
@Fraktl_
Wooden framing of the interior structure would not necessarily have doomed the building. Hell, there's buildings with wooden exteriors that survived the fire still standing in River North and Lincoln Park.
First off, why does Mike Lindell look like he's been turned into a vampire?
Secondly, it's the Sermon on the Mount, not the mound. lmao
Thirdly, Paul was not at said sermon because he was converted well after the resurrection.
Fourthly, who turned Mike Lindell into a vampire?
I say that knowing that actually succeeding in changing a bureaucracy as big and old as that of the City of Chicago or the State of Illinois is no easy task and that many public servants and their staff work hard on this stuff.
But, man.
I love Chicago and think its global influence is very interesting and worth celebrating.
That said, this is such a bizarre (and stupid) ad campaign that I did not initially realize it was intended to promote Chicago tourism.
Hey
@NYCMayor
, the Flat Iron is an iconic NYC landmark, but did you know it was invented in Chicago in1902 by Daniel Burnham?
Every city has a Chicago story.
#ChicagoNotInChicago
Congratulations to Ron DeSantis and Chris Christie for each winning 100% of the vote in two separate Chicago precinct in yesterday's primary election. They pulled this off, despite dropping out months ago, by winning the only GOP ballot cast in two South Side precincts.
lmao
Oh, shit, an email from my Alderman says the Cenacle Sisters are seeking to demolish their eponymous (and incredible) conference and retreat center on Fullerton in Lincoln Park.
They're going before the before the Chicago Landmark Commission on June 3rd.
@erich_luepke
Honestly, I don't think it even stands up to the efficiency question because most residents likely don't know they're responsible or don't have the means to pay for repairs out of pocket.
@mattzollerseitz
Also brilliantlynunmooring that he's not killed by Chigurgh, but by the other squad of conventional hit men that the cartel hired and which we have only heard spoken of.
Poor Beer Lady, though.
@louisafloftus
There's a church two blocks down the street, surrounded by luxury high rises and a billionaire's mansion, that has a saint's femur encased in their altar.
Shit's wild.
She's gone.
The last thing she saw was my face and the last thing she felt was Becky at her side. All her aches and anxieties are lifted and she can keep running, as she did while dreaming on my lap today.
The good vibes y'all sent earlier worked very quickly because I just accepted a new position as the Administrator of the Law, Letters, and Society program at UChicago!
Unlocking on here because I'm excited to share that I've been promoted to take over my old boss's job.
So, starting Monday, I will be the new Social Sciences Collegiate Division Administrator at UChicago!
This would be wild on its own but even more so when you take into consideration that Halsted Pointe is also looking to add a group of similarly sized skyscrapers right across the river
