Dyson Sphere by 2040? > Paul Christiano gave a 15% probability a Dyson Sphere by 2040 on @dwarkesh_sp > So I invited @Astro_Wright , astronomer and astrophysicist at Penn State, a specialist on detecting alien technological signatures to figure out whether it would be possible

@8teAPi It’s because openrouter does its leaderboard by tokens, and Grok uses like four times as many for each task.

it will be impossible to identify AGI except in retrospect. there will always be a more intelligent AI to be built (why else would we build Dyson spheres if we had AGI enough already?).
Either you crack general intelligence -- the ability to efficiently acquire arbitrary skills on your own -- or you don't have AGI. A big pile of task-specific skills memorized from handcrafted/generated environments isn't AGI, not matter how big.

these people loved their kids as much we do ours. 50% of those kids died before the age of 5. the past was dark and full of heartache

would also be interesting if this created healthcare tourism, or national centers of excellence. could imagine all transplant surgery shifted to the Mayo Clinic for example which accelerates research
I don't really understand why we don't just allow national competition for health insurance. It seems like the state pools are raising costs and reducing competition. Trump should rip the bandaid. People would immediately see cost savings.

one wonders which lesson in capitalism these accounts will deliver - never catch a falling knife - just buy low cost index funds - some people invest better than others - diversification is for losers - i should have bought Bitcoin at $300 - never bet against Elon
JUST IN: "Trump Accounts" will feature TAX-FREE contributions with "hundreds of major companies" set to contribute. 25+ million US kids will now receive $1,000 from the Trump Administration, $250 from Michael Dell, and all tax-free contributions made to these accounts. This

This could bring down fertilizer costs 90% (but the Indium catalyst would then 100x the price). great proof of concept but now they need to find a cheaper catalyst
Wow, Chinese researchers have developed direct coupling of atmospheric CO2 w/ ammonia to produce urea using solar energy as sole input. Up until now, they have been synethesizing "green" methanol & urea through waste straws, animal wastes & such. Would be a game changer to

It’s the end of the App Store. The end of lots of front end dev too. The end of app developers. Any task will be performed by AI and the only thing humans will do will be fun stuff like games and video.
Another DeepSeek moment. This is the world’s first actual smart phone. It’s an engineering prototype of ZTE’s Nubia M153 running ByteDance’s Doubao AI agent fused into Android at the OS level. It has complete control over the phone. It can see the UI, choose/download apps,

The American regulatory apparatus valued privacy over innovation. Lucky for humanity the Chinese are more collectivist and are debasing the privacy of their sixth of humanity to find cures faster.
I recently took @tszzl and @RichardHanania (true story lolz-and both advisors to my new venture in full disclosure) to one of the countries largest academic medical centers. @tszzl has since wrote a viral X thread thats worth reading again https://t.co/8kKnSDObh2 It speaks for

Most surviving US machine shops have long term US customers who are ok to pay high prices. I wonder what it takes to build a machine shop that can compete with Chinese manufacturing globally. Are there shops on Alibaba doing this? Does the US logistics chain allow this?
We are losing machine shops, fabricators, and factories every month still here in North America. NOX METALS was founded to give American manufacturers an edge. We are building software, automation, and working hard to offer more competitive pricing and shorter lead times. The
