Gun violence cannot be accepted as normal, as inevitable, as the sacrifice society is expected to bear so that individuals can maintain their rights to bear arms. If we can’t all be safe, no one is safe. We can and know how to make guns and gun ownership safer. #GunSafetyNow

NEW in @statnews today @jsross119 & I argue that reformulations of existing medications are more abt profits than patient health. But the other story here is about incentivizing the right type of innovation that meets the needs of the 21st century vs slightly tweaking medications

Today in @statnews, @rgupta729 and I argue that many reformulations of already marketed medicines — like switching from tablet to pill or an “extended release” product — are motivated more by corporate profits than patient health 1/2

@SarahS6901 She’s beautiful, and a miracle indeed 🤍 Something I’ve learned over the years is that equally loving families make different decisions. And I believe those decisions should be made in the counsel of your doctor & other people you trust.. not a law based on where you live.

Abortion is healthcare. Like every medical decision, it is complicated & nuanced & never taken lightly - by the person performing it or the one receiving it. But no matter the reason, no matter whether you or I would make the same choice, it is none of the government’s business.

But we found that youth with mood/anxiety disorders were >4x more likely to develop a problem with opioids. Also, three-quarters had already started to have problems with other substances, m. commonly nicotine, alcohol, and cannabis. 7/

Specifically, we need to tackle the child mental health crisis. In my experience, it is the rule & not the exception that teens w/ opioid addiction have underlying mental health problems: untreated depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma. 5/

I was asked to give a grand rounds on #racism and #sicklecell. But outlining the problems isn't enough. So I flipped the request around. We're going to talk about what we're going to do about racism's impact on our patients. And then do it.

…especially since so many new parents already feel guilt and shame for not being or providing “enough” for their child. Thank you @DrDianaMW and team for sharing your experiences and creating space for all birthing parents who are doing their best.

A balanced approach (and universal access to resources like paid leave, lactation support, and postpartum mental health support) is needed to support all birthing parents in their feeding choices during this overwhelming postpartum period…

Learning to breastfeed in the immediate postpartum period was incredibly stressful and anxiety-provoking—especially after my baby was readmitted for jaundice and weight loss—despite my enormous privilege as a pediatrician with paid leave and a supportive partner.

1/ Grady Hospital Clinic I could feel your grief the moment I stepped into the room. The resident had already told me of your loss. So fresh. So recent. They said you cried on an off for the whole visit. BP controlled. Labs fine. And a depression screen was negative. Yeah.

Support HB 4594 by @repgregharris to increase reimbursement for children's outpatient mental health services. We're seeing more mental health ER visits by kids since the pandemic started. This bill will help kids before they reach the point of crisis. @illinoisaap @LurieHCN
