3. Routine laboratory tests are not recommended as they rarely change management or disposition.4. Before discharge home, provide brief suicide prevention interventions, such as safety planning and counseling to reduce access to lethal means. Check out the podcast for more tips!.

Tips include: .1. Universal suicide screening in the ED using a validated screening tool can identify children at risk for suicide.2. Asking about suicidal thoughts and behaviors does not increase the risk of suicidal behaviors occurring.

4 years ago today, I visited my kids' middle school to talk about immigration and the Trump Admin's "Migrant Protection Protocols" which kept families in crowded tent encampments on the Mexican border. Kids here made cards for kids I'd be visiting there. /1

@988Lifeline @TrevorProject 1 in 8 gender diverse youth who screened positive for suicide risk came to the emergency department for a non-mental health reason. This highlights the importance of universal suicide risk screening regardless of the reason for visit.
