the crowning achievement of my writing career is getting
@st_vincent
to say “i would like to go to funkytown” on record. annie also called me her baby boy, which means i am legally no longer allowed to use they/them pronouns
if you’re reading this, please don’t watch or read hillbilly elegy. it will only perpetuate the spreading of incorrect & harmful rhetoric about appalachian people, especially the poc in the region. here’s a list of books abt/by appalachian people of color:
At Paste today, we crowned
@JasonIsbell
our artist of the year. A few weeks ago, Jason and I caught up about ‘Weathervanes,’ sobriety, finding honesty in songwriting, and much more.
I'm enchanted to share some great news. I've written a new book called "Heartbreak Is The National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music."
It's coming November 12 from
@deystreet
. Hope you enjoy reading and happy Tortured Poets Eve. Long live.

I wrote an essay for
@lithub
about how I pointed my compass towards the 17th episode of Freaks and Geeks, in search of guidance on how to navigate my own queer narrative, because the lack of intersex resources in canonized poetry has routinely failed me:
Imagine being a high school student excited to talk to and interview a NYT best-selling author & end up getting humiliated on social media just for simply reaching out. This could’ve just stayed in the DMs. What an unneccessary stunt.
I wrote 6500 words about Devo—one of the greatest bands of all time, who also happened to grow up in the same area code as me. So grateful to Jerry Casale for humoring my obsessions for an hour. This is the piece I’ve been waiting five years to write. 🔗⬇️
been sitting on this announcement for a while now: my debut poetry full-length, The Neon Hollywood Cowboy, is coming from Big Lucks next spring! it’s gonna be sick, and i can’t wait to share it with you.
i’ve had a long, complicated relationship with coming out. i don’t like announcing things and prefer to just tell loved ones in confidence. but it’s getting to be too much. please stop misgendering me, especially in regards to my writing. i use they/them pronouns, thanks
in 6ish months we’ve profiled hozier, wilco, brittany howard, sleater-kinney, noah kahan, kevin abstract, pj harvey, jason isbell, faye webster, adrianne lenker & vince staples
big thing on tierra whack is coming this month. the world is our oyster, digital media will endure
today marks a year as head music editor at paste and i’m quite lucky to still be here and still be writing and still be learning. i get to work with some of the best, kindest people in the biz. all my love to the writers, publicists, bands and readers who make this such a dream
Thread regarding what’s going on with Adr*it Journal tonight:
CW / sexual assault
Back in September I was alerted by a friend that the journal had published the work of Mark Wagenaar, who has/d an open Title IX case against him, and I subsequently pulled my work from 1/?
I officially finished undergrad today. Now it’s time to keep doing what I’ve been doing: writing poetry from midnight to 4 AM and sleeping in until 2 PM daily
I want to write a poem about coronavirus but I also don’t want to get bullied by poets with more followers than me who think they have some kind of authority
very cool waking up to an email this morning that takes you to this Lambda Literary page, where my book is the first book you see on a Most Anticipated Book list. what

today is International Intersex Day here on earth, and i’m happy to be alive and visible and loved. to celebrate my body’s existence, here’s a poem from The Neon Hollywood Cowboy, due out next spring from

My first cover story as a Paste editor is on Wednesday (
@Wednesday_Band_
). If you wanna take a super deep dive into what makes these Asheville punks immaculately shred, give this thing a read for them and for me:
you could’ve told me astro poets wrote this & i’d believe you… i’m tired of hackneyed, watered down politicking buzzword language being used like this & the writers thinking they’re some kind of revolutionary for naming the thing but shucking it bone dry of any meaningful weight
i wrote a very long essay about the grief that comes while watching the iron claw when your family has a curse of its own. different magnitudes, of course, but the weight of death remains heavy all the same.
I have begun to eat a more diverse range of fruits and veggies since February and excuse me but plums are ELITE, I can't believe I had been sleeping on plums for so long. I need to get into all of the albums, the entire back catalog, the b-sides, the whole thing
Happy release day to THE NEON HOLLYWOOD COWBOY. As it officially ships out to everyone this week, I remain thankful for all the ways it has helped me relearn how to be alive & be in love with my body. If you bought a copy of the book—thank you for taking a chance on my heart, 1/2
endless thank yous to everyone who said such kind things today about my writing. it can get pretty lonesome in this business, just writing and publishing into the void and not knowing if anyone is looking at it or not. you’re all great and made me feel so loved
This morning The National dropped a password-protected video with song snippets and this Frankenstein-esque letter entry, that appears to mention Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, and Sufjan Stevens. I can’t wait for the new record, I hope it’s their very best

A gender neutral deodorant with the longevity of men’s and smell of women’s would be the ultimate super toiletry. I really would love to rock that lavender smell all day.

For the first of two (!) June cover stories over at Paste, we have
@Bully
, who made the best rock record of the year so far. Very grateful to Alicia for being so generous in our conversation + for trusting me with this story.
📣 tNHC COVER REVEAL 📣
beyond fucking thrilled to show you the official cover of THE NEON HOLLYWOOD COWBOY, which will be out in the spring from
@Big_Lucks
. it’s beautiful. it’s here. it’s vintage as all heck.
My poetry low of the year: Paying $$$ for a workshop run by a very ILLUSTRIOUS lit mag & not getting a single word of the feedback I was promised from any of the mentors running it.
I can’t believe I paid 3-figures to do college poetry prompts in a group chat.
hey! I’ve got another book coming in 2021 and it’s called GROWN OCEAN and
@wordwestpress
is going to publish it in the fall! the poems in this book mean so much to me, and I can’t wait for y’all to read them.
hi, we’re thrilled to announce the sixth (and final) book in our 2021 chapbook series... we will be publishing
@matt_mitchell48
’s GROWN OCEAN! it’s an amazing collection of poems, electric and beautiful and alive. we’re honored to be able to put it out into the world!
if one person’s Instagram story can cause the entire poetry community on social media to collapse, maybe that community just isn’t all that great to begin with
It’s
@jennylewis
szn, y’all! She told me I look like Leo DiCaprio in Basketball Diaries—but we also talked about other things, like shedding grief, Beck’s songwriting camp, the magic of Jon Brion, and the badassery of Kim fucking Deal
locked the account so i can tell my 3,000 person world that maya hawke called me smart and cool today during our interview and my ego will ride that high until i perish
Stoked to announce that my poem “but the wind blew me back via Warren, OH in the dead of night” won 1st place in the Gordon Square Review 2020 poetry contest. Issue coming soon, and I can’t wait to share this ode to my second home with you.
Big Instagram account with 300k followers wanted to charge me $150 to promote only 4 of my art pieces. Fuck that. Just gonna share here. DM for a commission, I’d love to do something cool with you.
today is my 23rd birthday but today is also the 36th birthday of Tom Petty’s Southern Accents album. so I wrote a poem about that, and it’s now my 3rd skull at

I have written 113 interview features on artists this year, with two more on the way before 2023 is over and the biggest cover story of my life thus far ready to hit the first week of January. I wanted to take some time to highlight my favorites.
i wrote a cover story on sleater-kinney and there is a part where carrie brownstein says squirrely, terse, loquacious, surfy, unhinged, gross, raunchy, grotesque, and disgusting all in one quote.
