I’ll say it again — Metro Vancouver is THE North American hotbed for transit-oriented development. No other North American region comes close. Today was DAY 1 of 4 days of “deep dives” touring municipal leaders from Ontario, exploring skytrain lines & transformed station areas.

@USPS @UPS @FedEx The great @doctorow calls this process #enshittification. We should expect it whenever we're told that "government should run more like a business." Now, it's coming for our wedding, and for the little business that sent us this package. Eventually it comes for us all. 12/12.

@USPS @UPS @FedEx Because if the only goal is profit, they way to do that is (1) buy politicians who will suppress your competition, (2) buy out competitors, (3) entrap the customer, (4) drive down quality and drive up price. 11/.

@USPS @UPS @FedEx Functional nations need functional infrastructure and services. Sometimes that includes public services (post offices, transit systems) whose goals are great service rather than profit. 10/.

@USPS @UPS @FedEx The one way that @usps excels is at the point of delivery. @fedex and @ups can be counted on to put a package in the most obvious and stealable location, while @usps usually makes an effort to conceal it. 9/.

@USPS I am sure that @ups and @FedEx give lots of money to candidates who promise to help undermine @usps. But those companies are only marginally more competent, although at least they offer premium services with better tracking. 8/.

@USPS By the way, the first time I looked at their tracking system, last weekend, it enthusiastically promised delivery on Monday June 30. On Tuesday July 1 it acknowledged that the package was late. Now it no longer mentions lateness. 7/.

@USPS So what @usps seems to be telling me here is that as long as they regularly update me about the package's progress in wrong direction, I have no recourse at all. 6/.

@USPS So I figure it's time to reach out But then I discover that as long as the system continues to produce tracking updates regularly, I am prohibited from contacting them. This is just astonishing. 5/

Maybe that's not what "Distribution Center" means. Maybe they should explain their terms. The whole @USPS tracking system speaks only in insider jargon designed to alarm but not inform the customer. 4/.

Why has the package been sent to the Denver "Distribution Center"? This strongly suggests that they're getting ready to deliver it somewhere in Colorado. It's addressed to me in Oregon. 3/.

An urgent package that needs to get here before our wedding on July 13 is en route from Savannah, Missouri addressed to me in Portland, Oregon. So far, it's been to Chicago and now it seems to be in Denver. The tracking system gives only enough info to maximize panic. 2/

I'm having an interesting personal experience with the Trump Administration's ongoing efforts to wreck the US Postal Service, and thereby to wreck the countless small businesses that rely on it for affordable shipping. 1/. @USPSHelp.

Seattle is the big city of the US northwest, with a bigger economy and much more spectacular scenery, but deep down, it wishes it were Portland.

The @TWULocal100 has quietly championed legislation that would require two workers operate a train. The bill, if signed into law by Gov. Hochul, would be a big setback to the MTA's efforts to reduce labor costs:.

The official view of America by the government department charged with protecting it. Sidewalks too narrow, not enough buffer from traffic, cars from the 1960s, but overall, the kind of small, dense, walkable community that is illegal to build almost everywhere in the US.
