does he always sound like david lynch? it's funny because they both love reagan
When Americans fly in from across our land to JFK & LaGuardia and hear over the loudspeaker, "I am Mayor @ZohranKMamdani, welcome to NYC," they will look to their children filled with pride and say, "In NY any dream is still possible!"

The ICE raids in LA have been deadly, but day laborers urge us to fight back not despair.
I spent a week with volunteers keeping a daily ICE watch in LA’s MacArthur Park. Their Home Depot was the site of the first mass raid on Los Angeles, and their defense center is a model for how we all might fight back.

Tom Angotti was one of my first forays into the depths of housing and planning. It's really amazing to see him here use the analytical tool of Protagonism (borrow from 21st Century Socialism theorist Marta Harnecker) to describe alternatives to top down technocratic YIMBY policy.
1/2: Leftist urban planner and housing justice advocate Tom Angotti breaks down why NYC ballot measures 2-4 are a real estate industry sponsored "scam" that will further disempower working class communities for the benefit of mega-real estate developers. https://t.co/98ye7ki0Xg

So funny that some young fascist intern at NYPost had to comb their archive of DSA google docs with ctrl+f to find my name.

zohran recruiting and paying influencer to coordinate coverage for "viral" campaign stumping HAS to be something one of the dem strategists cooked up. it's so corny and the least authentic aspect of his campaign so far.

YIMBYs responding to this very normally by saying it's bad to force developers to invest in city infrastructure like NYCHA and have affordability minimums
If this policy were in place 5 years ago - the Gowanus Rezoning would have seen $0 for NYCHA, no deep affordable housing at Gowanus Green, no protections for Gowanus artists, no transit investments. Not sure Lander would be able to cite Gowanus Rezoning as proud accomplishment…

The lack of position 2-4 are just one consequence. Imagine when Zohran is actually mayor and has to make BIG devastating compromises and bets in order to deliver his promises? Do you have any faith DSA will take a position on it or allow members to deliberate democratically?

And leadership sees all of this. It's all a translation and it fucking sucks and it makes the prospect of NYC DSA becoming a vehicle for mass democratic working class self activity more and more difficult.

So instead you have members with big followings and plateforms sharing the views of astroturfing developer fronts like OpenNY and members earnestly asking followers for answers about the housing measures getting hounded by hordes of YIMBY from across the country.

NYCDSA internal political education culture doesn't exist and stifled by the leadership incest between DSA and housing non profits (and now a mayor) who support cross class collaboration to deliver their agenda even if it means empowering future mayor monarchs.
@rcmoya84 i see stuff like this and i always wonder what the internal political education culture is like in these groups. seems like those are the meetings everyone feels like they can skip

Also, what is there to even say about "what political forces benefit most" from no development? Ahistorical nonsense. Here's the rub: real estate capitalists wins in any case when we fight on these terms.

As socialists, we're meant to think about who owns what, what are the forces and sources of extraction, etc. Discussing development/no development without these bigger questions is meaningless & the sort of simplistic nonsense housing politics was defined by for decades

22 second clip that explains exactly why there will never be “abundance” no matter how much you zone.
“One of the challenges we face in San Francisco is we need the rent to go back up.” It is so refreshing to hear YIMBYs say this stuff out loud. Private developers have no plan for building new housing when rents actually go down.
