Yesterday, the NIH R35 “Outstanding Investigator” grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab

Worth noting: Many of the projects being canceled are based at Columbia's medical school, 50 blocks away from the main campus where the protests happened last year. Many are training grants that support graduate students or postdocs.

Today #NIH is terminating more than $250 million in funding—including more than 400 grants—to Columbia University following directives from the Trump Administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. The cancellations are due to Columbia University’s continued inaction

My Michigan teammate, Nate Brannen set the NCAA record with his 3:55 back in 2004. He was a two-time NCAA champion, 3 time Olympian and Olympic Finalist. His mark wouldn't even qualify in this modern era. Crazy

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

Collegiate track and field athletes are putting up outstanding performances every week. Our NCAA collegiate championships will be incredible. Why are we not discussing the demise of our collegiate sports on our national TV platforms? We must call this out before it is too late.

NIH grants drive more than $92.89 billion in economic activity across all 50 U.S. states and DC. It is estimated that every dollar of NIH funding generates $2.46 dollars of economic activity. So what you are bragging about is a more than $22 B hit to local economies across the US

@JasonSynaptic If you’re funding research, it has to be done in a building that needs to be maintained, heated; with IT that has databases and software, in an entity that can process that grants, manage the legals, finance and recruitment of staff… all before a pipette is even lifted.

Sure, the very rich universities could be using endowments. But people concentrate on the richest ones and forget these are the exception. States have pulled back funding for higher education. Tuition doesn’t cover these costs either. So yeah…

There’s a lot of glee in the comments to this post. The thing is, universities use this money to pay facilities, upkeep and admin to manage the grants. Cutting it to just 15% will decimate universities, especially medical schools. One can argue on where that $$ should come from..
