Yes, and a floating jail, just like all other jails and prisons across the country, should horrify you. The Bain center is simply an extension of Rikers, designed in the early 1990s as a “temporary solution” to overcrowding within the city. It remains in operation by NYDOC
The exploitation of prisoners is happening every single day. Construction, farmwork, firefighting, sewing uniforms for fasfood employees, and even digging the graves for upcoming funerals – oh, and some states don’t pay them at all

Interested in the story of incarcerated firefighters? Here’s a good starting point. Countless incarcerated men & women are performing life-threatening work for a job that they’re ineligible for upon release
I am just a tired, tired girl, asking how in the world so many of y’all manage teaching + make progress on individual research projects + support others + perform departmental service +read for pleasure + maintain your wellbeing all within the same semester?
To be clear: Yes, I understand most of the incarcerated individuals have a “choice” to become firefighters and perform other labor. I’m simply highlighting the fact that they are paid significantly less than their non-incarcerated counterparts performing the same job.
Okay, I can’t keep the secret anymore!
I’m headed *back* to grad school! It’s real, it’s happening, I’m going to be a sociology PhD student
@OhioState
this fall. Love and appreciation to my village for the endless support. See you soon, Columbus ❤️
I don’t know who needs to hear this (it’s me, I need to hear it) but qualitative research is valid and important and flexible and essential to understanding larger issues!
Alright so, boom. Today’s the first official day of my PhD program! Here’s to a semester of
- setting boundaries
- prioritizing rest
- asking for help when needed
- staying hydrated
- finding memes & tiktoks for all applicable situations
It happened, it really happened. I successfully defended my thesis today and can finally celebrate!
Grateful for the invaluable guidance and support from my committee: Dana Haynie,
@RinReczek
, & Townsand Price-Spratlen. The path to PhD is long but I’m another step closer 😊
Tweeting this because it’ll never happen again:
I did a workout, grabbed a coffee, took a walk around the block, and finished my data analysis without crying all before 9am. Please clap.
I often come back to this 2022 op-ed from community organizer, Edwin Santana, who was once detained at the Vernon C. Bain Center. Geographically, the floating jail is far from courthouses and rendered invisible to many in NYC
Feelin’ blessed & highly favored, y’all

Continuously troubled by the fact that I wake up and mourn the loss of Black and brown folks every single morning and I’m still expected to bring my “whole self” to work with little acknowledgement of what that actually means.
This is my final semester

which means I’m job eligible! Took some notes from the modern youth & created the

#pelotoncooldown
is the greatest thing that has happened this week. Literally screaming at this data and amazed considering my bike was in storage for 4 months ❤️🚴🏾♀️ LETS GO
In the spirit of sharing academic wins & losses - I didn’t get the Ford Predoctoral Fellowship but remain incredibly proud of the application I submitted. I received positive feedback about my current research on financial precarity the & collateral consequences of incarceration!
@FizzyBazza
I wish I took a photo yesterday because I had my hair in the same style as hers! Her curls are so beautiful!! ❤️🥰 so much love for all hair types!
Thinking about those of us with incarcerated loved ones. Thinking about those of us who’s loved ones left way too soon. My heart is with you all today and every day ❤️
14 students killed in an elementary school shooting in Uvalde, a heavily Latino city in Texas. Border Patrol also on the scene. I pray for those parents fearing that their kids are dead and debating whether or not they'll be arrested if they go to find out.
Grad Students do make a living wage, and the offer on the table takes them to 38-39/hr, not including free tuition, great health care, and child care-an $80,000-100,000 benefit package. I'd like to do more, but also think GEO should counter the offers (4 of them) on the table.
@ndawon1
I genuinely don’t know what’s happening or why it’s happening but here we are! (People trying to tell me about how prisons are run as if I don’t know is actually hilarious though)
@chrissyteigen
you see creepiness, I see childhood memories of getting my American Girl Doll’s hair braided and her leg put back in the socket after a “tragic accident”
Hey y’all, I’m Candice! I’m a first-year PhD student at Ohio State. I study the punishment system - incarcerated labor, collective action, monetary sanctions & more. Outside of academics, I love spin classes (yes, the bike that goes nowhere) & houseplants✨🌿🚴🏾♀️

Surprise, surprise - my most listened to artist of 2019 was indeed, the Sagittarius queen
@JanelleMonae
. My top five were all women artists. Love this for me.
Went to YouTube University and learned how to make a chunky knit blanket. For the last few months, I got a little carried away and now have this handmade, queen size beauty!
I’ve said it before, but worth repeating. I’m not going to overwork myself for an institution. Despite plans, it’s often hard when you’re passionate about many things that demand time and energy. Many of us are halfway through the semester so all I can say is we got this! 🫶🏾
Celebrating a great week w/
@osusoc
! Honored to be recognized by my colleagues for department service & support! I’m holding the TA (teaching assistant) award especially close. Being in the classroom is such a rewarding experience and I’m so grateful for this surprise ❤️
Yes, it’s true, she’s no longer an intern!

worked! I’m transitioning into researching women’s incarceration full-time at Vera. As the cool kids say, hot takes & opinions are MOST DEFINITELY my own. Thanks for the reshares & support during this process 💛

Spring break is really over? I have to seriously go back to prepping for lectures? I need to analyze the data? I have to finish the semester strong? Ew.
Yesterday, our cohort went around the dinner table & shared our wins for the semester. One win is everyone’s win and I love that we genuinely cheer each other on. The department/admissions committee really won when they put our little group together 😭💗
I really love that people love to tell me their good news. I be genuinely so happy!! People in my circle are doing great things and making all the moves and its a win for all of us 💞🥹
“Who is it that we are protecting by insisting on carceral solutions if the person harmed here is not interested in pursuing any legal recourse?”
Another phenomenal piece,
@WrittenByHanna
! No more new discourse, just this article shared widely forever and ever!
Thinking of O’Shae Sibley and those who loved him. Murdered at a gas station in Brooklyn. For voguing. For simply dancing and experiencing Black joy while listening to Renaissance. My heart breaks.
Every single day I log onto this app and see respected criminologists actively making poor language choices online and presumably, in class. Professors, please, for the love of the few things good on this earth, STOP using the word “inmate.”
This seems to be taking a lot of people out in the replies so a few points for clarity:
- This is about the labor exploitation of incarcerated folks (forced labor as punishment)
- The language on the ballot varied by state. More on that here:
Just posted final grades. Thats a wrap on year 3 of the PhD program and my first semester as an independent instructor! This marks the end of a major department service commitment, too. Lots of feelings about lots of things but always grateful for my community❤️
I love hearing other interns talk about their college experiences because they all think their school is the greatest, but none of them went to Penn State; therefore, they’re all wrong. Wow.
Due to personal reasons my breakdowns will start at 9am and end promptly at 5pm. Short intermissions will occur during scheduled zoom meetings where I’ll nod and pretend like everything’s fine. This will continue until further notice.
it’s Tyler James Williams walking her up to the stage 😭 it’s Quinta making sure nobody trips on the dress 😭 it’s the standing ovation 😭 it’s the camera immediately flashing to the other iconic Black women in the room 😭 it’s Sheryl winning an award she deserved ages ago 😭

I....well, I watch people play the Sims. There was a significant chunk of my 2019 devoted to watching the “100 baby challenge” by
@kelseydangerous
.
So I put this bookshelf situation together and nothing went terribly wrong?? Turns out, I might not be in my flop era after all!
It’s nice to finally get my workspace in order – just in time for finals 😅
Here’s your regularly scheduled unfriendly reminder that California (and other states) rely on incarcerated labor to fight wildfires, often paying less than $2/hour. This is what we call — say it with me — modern slavery.
My mom walked by and only read the first half of the book title, lol. She was extremely concerned (before seeing the second part) which means my rants at the dinner table have been working 😆
The climate crisis (among other things) is leading to illness and death in prisons and jails across the country
also notice how correctional officer reps blame “understaffing” rather than the deadly conditions created and supported by the prison industrial complex
A Minnesota prison was placed on emergency lockdown after about 100 inmates in one housing unit facing dangerously high temps wouldn't return to their cells
“It is a 100 year old building with no AC, no central air. The walls actually sweat.”
I am legally obligated to share that today is not only my birthday, but also the last day of fall classes. This may be the greatest crossover event of the year. 🤪
Chiming in with gratitude for all of the responses. The quote tweets & replies are a mix of comedy (we all have to laugh through the pain!) as well as helpful suggestions - keep adding ❤️
Though I posed the question, I’ve prioritized rest and have occasional “no work” afternoons

Merry Christmas everyone, especially my relatives who thought I was in law school this whole time. Sorry to break it to you, I’m a researcher and I’m getting a masters degree in human rights studies. Your family lawyer dreams have been crushed. Happy holidays! ✌🏾💛
Today I sat it on a proponent hearing for SB 83, a proposed bill that would eliminate the right to strike at state universities in OH & prohibit mandatory DEI training, just to name two items. The statements I heard in support of this bill…I have no words
