Candace breaks down why sanctioning Rosneft & Lukoil is a bigger deal than it might seem. Also worth noting: the new sanctions turn the screws on Russia's burgeoning crypto industry, too, which the state has used to circumvent financial restrictions.
1/ This is Igor Sechin — CEO of Rosneft and one of Vladimir Putin’s oldest allies from their KGB-era St. Petersburg days. Yesterday, his company was hit with the U.S.’s toughest sanctions yet. And that’s a big deal. 🧵

What's interesting about Russia's new WeChat equivalent is the apparent need - in 2025 - for Russian authorities to avoid looking overtly dictatorial. So they're doing behavioral economics to nudge people away from Telegram rather than banning outright. https://t.co/gs1MfiydnD

From Africa to Ukraine, the rise and fall of the Wagner Group and its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was marked by theatrical violence, the seizure of resources, and an utter lack of accountability.

Yeah, when belief in any shared social project collapses - and that's usually a reasonable reaction on the part of normal people to moves from the top - then everyone starts thinking in terms of extracting as much as they can. And they don't fault others for doing the same.
.@yashalevine has a point, and it's actually much bigger. Nobody cares much anymore about corruption in Europe, either. A lot of the problems Westerners archly diagnosed in 90s Russia have become ours, like oligarchy, or political parties lacking ideologies and constituencies.

Congratulations to @ZohranKMamdani on an incredible win and a courageous, principled campaign. People are hungry for a government that is relentlessly focused on improving their lives, even when it means standing up to corporate power and moneyed interests.
