if you’ve followed me for a while, you know i spend a lot of time at drpc. we need your help to stay open. regular shows are harder to host now, so we’re leaning on monthly sustainers. even $5–10/month helps. https://t.co/9gDbZ2tJC4

i don’t think philly is like every city on earth being that it has consistently higher rates of fare evasion than other major US cities and a 25% poverty rate. shit, fare evasion had to be decriminalized because it was subject to such racial bias and you want to expand that??
American lefties have this idea that American transit agencies should be able to sprint before they’ve learned how to crawl. Practically every other successful transit agency on earth is doing it wrong and we shouldn’t follow their lead, instead we should emulate Kansas City/ABQ

fair evasion is still going to exist regardless of turnstiles or police. if you care about the program being funded why wouldn’t you support a non-fare based system since it clearly had inherent flaws?
I think these people are fully aware that the cost of combatting fare evasion in Philadelphia specifically doesn’t come close to how much the agency actually loses from fare evasion but they’d prefer not to admit it

if fare evasion costs $70M a year and we spend millions more policing it & retrofitting stations with new turnstiles, maybe rolling SEPTA into the city wage or sales tax make more sense? seems like treating it as a commodity is more expensive than just treating it as a service.
SEPTA literally doesn’t have enough money to hire two station attendants for some of their express stations (like at Spring Garden) but sure, the $50mn-$70mn lost to fare evasion is really inconsequential when you think about it

This isn't the first time Trump's acknowledged that Stephen Miller is a Nazi, it's just the first time he's done it publicly.
Trump: I want to thank Stephen Miller I would love to have him come up and explain his true feelings. Maybe not his truest feelings. That might be going a little too far

The Vice President of the United States has come out in defense of a Nazi group chat that glorified gas chambers and rape. This is the current state of the Republican Party and this is how you will be remembered.

Reminder that it's a full-blown federal felony crime for anyone in the White House (and all Secretaries but the AG) to order the IRS to target people. It's not just a crime to DO it, it's a federal crime for an employee not to REPORT such order to the Treasury Inspector General.

“This is not law enforcement; this is the playbook of authoritarian regimes,” an attorney said. "This behavior is a painful parallel to the days of the KKK patrolling the streets with their faces covered, terrorizing people of color."

i sound like a broken record but socialists have to become ardent defenders of the limited rights won by the working class under liberal democracy.

we’re in a dreadful situation where we have at best a complacent opposition and at worst a collaborationist opposition. the hurdles to forming a competitive third party are essentially insurmountable, as even the two party system is at risk of collapse.
