Of course this can largely be avoided if they move to dismantle Israel and stop its slaughter in Palestine and also begin forming alternative political blocs away from US dominance but don’t hold your breath.

The West won’t accept the latter, which is both necessary and just, so it will cling to the crumbling present order even as it continues to hurl corpses at its feet. And then one day it will, one way or another, be too late for them too.

B/c the alternatives are 1. Pure might makes right as embraced and articulated by Israel and the US, which would disadvantage junior partners in American empire as well as the rest of the world or 2. A violent reordering of the world order in favor of the global majority.

But because the crimes, which have again always been the norm, are now live streamed in full view, both the regulatory and legitimating power are crumbling—the former quicker than the latter. Part of the West clings to the latter w/ an even tighter grip the more hollow it becomes.

The order—which is, in practice, colonial genocide by so many names—preserves itself precisely through the legal edifice which would, if followed, prevent its functioning. i.e. it exercises a weak regulatory but robust legitimating power so long as crimes are hidden from view.

We’re in a world where it is primarily counter-systemic actors like Ansar-Allah that are working to vindicate, at least in letter, the international order—but b/c of the nature of the order *as it actually exists*, action in service of its preservation will be considered illegal.

What the Geneva conventions did is create a discursive space where, if you are a Western state, war crimes can be conjured away with these magic words and some paper work because no country or court has the power or courage to put you in jail or force you to stop your slaughter.
