Court may or may not order such protection in a given case. But it is not wrong to be examining the statement or context and exploring a solution before granting such a protection.

Imagine if a group wanted to, lawfully, picket a screening of a movie that they disagree with. Would they not be suppressed by a court order of this sort?.

You may say - so what? should not police protection be given when what has been said is not unlawful?."Police protection" or any other order of the court is a powerful sanction of the state against any response to it.

In this situation, the court exploring a solution to the problem is not wrong. Mr. Perumal Murugan also seems to have missed this crucial difference and has said court ought to have given police protection.

The editorial page and the op-ed page of The Hindu today have articles that touch upon the Kamal Hasan Thug Life comments issue. I agree with @sanjayuvacha sir's larger point. But equating Kamal Hasan's case with Ali Khan's case or Ranveer Allahabadia's case is not correct.
