What is happening in occupied Palestine is a response to weeks and months and years of daily Israeli military invasions into Palestinian towns, killings of Palestinians, and the very fact that millions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are besieged under Israeli blockade.
We’re not sure what supporting Palestinians’ right to resist their violent oppression by the Israeli state has to do with anti-semitism. Perhaps Peterson has special insight on that though from discussions with his many far-right and neo-Nazi followers.
HUGE turnout for Palestine in Naarm/Melbourne today! There is hope for the future when so many, here and around the world, are standing up against our political leaders who've made themselves complicit in Israel's genocide.
Maybe the people ‘ruining Christmas’ aren’t the handful of peace activists briefly disrupting Carols by Candlelight but those who are carpet bombing refugee camps and carrying out deadly military raids in the birthplace of Jesus. Just a thought.
Not even 9am on polling day in Dunkley and already one of our volunteers has been asked by the AEC booth manager to take off their keffiyeh ‘for the comfort of all voters’ after a complaint. We will NOT be complying with this request.
Vic Socialists' member
@van_nishing
finished this terrific mural on Paisley Street in Footscray last night.
Labor won't raise the rate or fix our schools, hospitals and public housing – but even in a cost of living crisis there's billions of dollars for nuclear subs 🙃
We're very sorry for the terrible behaviour of a small number of our volunteers. Suffice to say these kind of antics DO NOT reflect the values of our party.
In the eyes of the right, expressing basic solidarity to a people resisting oppression is seen as a crime. The world they want is one where those in power, whether in Israel, Australia, or anywhere else, can carry out their crimes with complete impunity.
Sorry Labor, but you can’t claim your budget is ‘responsible’ while you’re planning to spend $368B on submarines and $254B on tax cuts for the rich while leaving welfare recipients in abject poverty and millions of people struggling to even keep a roof over their heads. 1/2
VICTORIAN SOCIALISTS STATEMENT ON PALESTINE
We encourage Victorian Socialists members and supporters to attend upcoming rallies organised by
@FPMelbourne
in solidarity with the Palestinians and against Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza…
Crowd size has increased by hundreds within the last 15 minutes. (Can’t get a Birds Eye view of the crowd as the access points to the upper levels of Melbourne Central have been fenced off for some reason).
Neo-Nazis rallying outside Parliament in support of British transphobe Kellie-Jay Keen (aka Posie Parker). Their rally has been facilitated by the police – who, as usual, are focused on holding back anti-fascist protesters who are there to stand up for trans rights
The abandonment of Assange by our govt and the mainstream media is a disgrace. His life is being destroyed, not because he has committed any crime, but for doing what all good journalists should: bringing to light atrocities committed by the US empire and its allies.
#FreeAssange
If the gov won't stop homes being left empty during a housing crisis then why not publish the addresses? VS policy is to bring properties vacant for 2+ years without a legitimate reason into public ownership. But if there's other means to disincentivise it, let's use those too!
Victorian Socialists encourages its members and supporters to vote ‘yes’ in the 14 October referendum on establishing an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Read our full statement here:
Thousands out for Palestine in Naarm/Melbourne for the 24th Sunday (almost) in a row. ‘In our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians!’ ✊🇵🇸
If Western political leaders care about civilian lives so much when will we hear them denounce the collective punishment and mass terror being inflicted by the Israeli state on civilians in Gaza (which has been going on for decades before the current conflagration)?

🚨 Israel Defence Minister: "I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly." |

It's still too early to tell how things will pan out in the upper house, but already from our district results it's clear Victorian Socialists' message of hope and resistance has struck a chord throughout Melbourne's north and west. 1/10
Waiting to see if Labor people express as much outrage about Israel’s bombing of a hospital and murder of more than 500 people as they have e.g. about Greens MPs making some relatively mild criticisms of Israel’s actions in Gaza. No doubt it’ll be ‘too hard to judge from afar’.
We’re proud to have run what, as far as we know, was the first ever socialist campaign in Dunkley, and to have won more than 1,400 people (on the current count) to vote 1 socialist - most of them for the first time. 🧵
An overview of where things stand with Victorian Socialists' district results in the Western Metro Region. Our results in the west are spectacular, considering the smaller size of our campaigns and the fact we’re newer to campaigning there. 1/9
Would be nice if the people being 'sent a message' were the ones making massive profits from cooking the planet, and not the people protesting about it. The brief disruption caused by these climate activists is nothing compared to what's in store from climate change.
Due to the resignation of Daniel Andrews, a by-election will take place in the south-eastern Melbourne seat of Mulgrave. Victorian Socialists is proud to announce Kelly Cvetkova as our candidate for this election. 🧵
It's official, Jorge Jorquera has won the recount and been declared an elected Maribyrnong Councillor. We have a VS councillor!!!!!
What an emotional rollercoaster it's been. This is such a great step forward for the Victorian Socialists and for the left in the western suburbs.
Another HUGE crowd building at the State Library for today’s rally for Palestine. We won’t stop until we win peace and justice for the Palestinians, and those responsible for and complicit in Israel’s genocide are held to account for their crimes.
Libs continuing with their absolutely top-notch campaign to defy the odds and unseat Daniel Andrews. Here's their candidate for Werribee Mia Shaw explaining that she's "proud to have delivered a number of positive changes to our local community including X and Y". 🙌
Another amazing set of pics thanks to
@MattH093
from yesterday's massive Palestine rally. Somewhere between 50,000-100,000 in attendance - making this the BIGGEST outpouring of solidarity with the Palestinians in Melbourne's (and possibly Australia's) history. 🧵
Big turnouts at Palestine solidarity rallies in Brisbane, Perth and Canberra last night. Melbourne's turn Sunday 12pm at the State Library on Swanston St. What we are witnessing now appears to be the preparation, by Israel, of a genocide. The world must not allow this.
Wonderful turn out to the rally against the Nazi gym in Sunshine today – jointly organised by
@campaignarf
and Victorian Socialists West.
‘No Nazis, never again!’
LEST WE FORGET:
The masses of workers who died needlessly in wars fought for the interests of the rich.
That behind the lofty phrases of the warmongers lies the sordid reality of imperial ambition - of wars fought for power and profit at the cost of millions of lives. 1/2
New mural painted yesterday on a wall in central Footscray by Victorian Socialists member and 2022 state election candidate for St Albans

(See Van's Insta - van.nishing - for more pics and videos). 🧵
Vote 1 Victorian Socialists. Our soon to be announced candidate has never been embroiled in any slug-related controversies and no-one has ever died after eating a sandwich they (directly or indirectly) prepared.
Meet Vic Socialists' Senate candidate Aran Mylvaganam. After surviving Australia's barbaric refugee detention system as a child, Aran went on to become a leading anti-racist activist and union organiser. This is his story:

We are excited to announce that Palestinian-Australian activist Reem Yunis will be the Victorian Socialists candidate for the Dunkley by-election, coming up on Saturday 2 March. You can read more about Reem, and her campaign, on the VS website here: . 🧵
Hundreds have turned out for today's school strike for Palestine - assembling now at Flinders Street Station. Get down there if you can and show these staunch kids some support! ✊🇵🇸
Vale Father Bob Maguire. One of the good ones: a man who fought for and alongside workers, the poor and the oppressed for a better life and a better world. ❤️
Greta Thunberg channeling the BLF's Jack Mundey (of 1970s Green Bans fame) during her arrest at a protest against the expansion of a German coal mine on the weekend is the kind of activist energy we want to see more of in 2023! ✊🚩
Reason is “calling out” the Liberals for preferencing the far-right Angry Victorians above Labor. But Reason is doing exactly the same thing.
In Western Victoria, Reason has Angry Victorians above Labor and the Greens. In Northern Victoria it has them above the Greens.🧵
Some pics from last night's Palestine solidarity rally in Naarm/Melbourne thanks to Matt Hrkac. Props to everyone who made it along and to
@FPMelbourne
for organising this at such short notice. 🧵
Of all the many stupidities that circulate on this platform this among the stupidest. It has been socialists and communists who everywhere (Germany, Spain, Italy etc etc) have been the most determined fighters against fascism and who have always been among its first victims.
With just over 85% of the vote counted, it is unfortunately almost certain that the 5th spot in Northern Metro Region will go to disgraced former Labor branchstacker Adem Somyurek, now with the DLP. Of the remaining spots, 2 will go to Labor, 1 to the Libs, and 1 to the Greens 🧵
Palestinian flag flying outside Preston town hall today in accordance with the motion voted up at Monday’s Darebin council meeting. These small acts of solidarity can, over time, help win the broader change we need to win peace and justice for Palestine. ✊🇵🇸
The referendum result is disappointing. We always knew though, that whatever the outcome, we would need to keep organising and fighting for Indigenous rights. That is what we will now do. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land! ✊
We live in a society where those destroying the planet for short-term profit are rewarded with billions in government subsidies and welcomed in the halls of parliament as friends, while those taking a stand against this destruction are treated as criminals and locked away.
Outrageous decision just now in a Sydney court
Climate activist Violet Coco given 15 month sentence, 8 months no parole after she blocked 1 lane of the Harbour Bridge for 25 mins in April
It's clear climate protesters are being targeted for disproportionate punishment
@hrw
When a Labor icon like Keating goes on national TV to call them out, and there's not even a hint of support for his stance from what remains of the Labor 'left', you know you're looking at a party with very little life left in it as a force for good
Labor: nuclear-powered submarines, tax cuts for the wealthy, endless expansion of gas and coal, carbon offsets and climate accounting tricks, and starved public education, health and social spending programs to wedge the Libs
We're extremely proud of our result in outer northern areas like Greenvale and Thomastown, where we outpolled the Greens by a significant margin – receiving the third biggest vote after Labor and the Liberals. 1/2
'This Time, Vote Socialist' we said – and more than 50,000 people have done exactly that.
Though we've (just) missed out on a seat this time, we’re not sooking – we’re enormously proud of our campaign, and we hope all our members and supporters are too. 🧵
The rain has cleared. The sun is out. And what a sight! Six months of marching for Palestine and still thousands coming out. ‘The people, united, will never be defeated!’ ✊🇵🇸☀️
Victorian Socialists recently received news that we've retained our status as a registered political party with the Australian Electoral Commission. We look forward to running a significant campaign in the next federal election (likely early 2025).
Unions at their weakest, and least combative, in more than 50 years. Steepest fall in real wages in a generation. 93% of income growth in decade to 2019 went to richest 10%. It's still not enough. They want to grind us into the dust!
Gurner Group founder Tim Gurner tells the Financial Review Property Summit workers have become "arrogant" since COVID and "We've got to kill that attitude."
Jewish and allied activists have occupied Defence Minister Richard Marles’ office in Geelong in solidarity with Palestine. Several people have locked on.
Grow your hair long and let your teeth rot so that inflation can come down without the poor-old banks, supermarkets, landlords etc etc having to take a cut to their bumper profits!
The Reserve Bank's new boss is warning Australians they're spending their way to extra interest rate rises. Michelle Bullock is blaming haircuts, visits to the dentist and eating out as key factors in what she describes as a "home-grown" inflation challenge.

Polling day in Dunkley. VOTE 1 Reem Yunis and Victorian Socialists! Send a message for real action on cost of living and for an end to Australian government support for Israel. Money for health, housing, and education not war!
Victorian Socialists crew at small but rowdy protest outside Crown Casino today where Anthony Albanese was speaking at a conference hosted by the Australian newspaper. It has been inspiring to see these kind of actions springing up everywhere this week!
Refreshing to have someone like Yanis Varoufakis come to Australia and talk sense about the absurdities of government policies in key areas like education and housing. Gives us all a break from the utter inanity that usually passes for policy discussion among the political class.
"Acknowledge that it has never been more dismal to be young in this country.
"Reverse the absurdity of the Australian Government collecting more money from HECS than it does from the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax."

Sickening.
For decades, Australian governments have been starving social services while pouring money into police and prisons. This is the result.
Defund and disarm the police!
Police tasered an Aboriginal girl with cerebral palsy and an intellectual disability until she lost consciousness, then handcuffed and shackled her after she refused to be interviewed alone over allegations she had been abused.
@australian
Just under 8 percent of Australians own an investment property yet among parliamentarians it's more than 65 percent. This parliament of landlords will have to be dragged kicking and screaming towards anything resembling a fair and equitable provision of housing.
The crowd at today's NTEU strike was HUGE! ✊
Check out the Melb Uni contingent arriving for a mass meeting at Trades Hall. It just goes on, and on, and on...
Labor has never seen a social issue it didn't think could be solved with more police. Heaven forbid we actually consider the evidence of what works to minimise harm from drug use rather than allowing policy be dictated by what they think might play well in the Herald Sun.
Victoria Police will use sniffer dogs and boost their presence at a hip-hop festival this week in response to a mass overdose at a recent electronic music event, as the state government shut down renewed calls for pill testing.
ABC sanitising the bio of our candidate for Dunkley Reem Yunis. VS website has "she has been a prominent activist in all of the campaigns against Israel's many assaults on Gaza...". ABC has "She has been a prominent activist on middle eastern affairs."
Swanston St yesterday afternoon. When there's a genocide going on, with the backing of the Australian and other Western governments, this is what you want to see. But we need to keep it up. Join us next Sunday, 12pm, at the State Library to do it again.
