Why is it that most plasmids are spp. specific, even if mobile? Liam Shaw from @CraigMacLean9 grp has really nice ideas & supporting evidence to explain. Great talk @MicrobioSoc #microbio23. Forthcoming paper preprinted here

Many novel traits such as antibiotic resistance are spread by plasmids between species. Yet plasmids have different host ranges. Restriction-modification systems (R-M systems) are by far the most...

Talking about #Mastodon...
For #FossilFriday a photo of the first #mastodon tooth found in #NovaScotia. It dates back to 1850s, from around Baddeck in #CapeBreton, perhaps found by Admiral Thomas Cochrane aboard the HMS Wellesley, later acquired by David Honeyman and exhibited at 1862 World Expedition.

Looks like #Mastodon is trending on Twitter as more and more people are announcing their new profiles. Welcome to the better social media that does not belong to a single company and cannot be sold, welcome to the fediverse!

I've written a short post explaining what mastodon actually is ; https://t.co/hRlWIBrmCo It's not as complicated as you think. We are setting up our own instance for science esp. microbial genomics. scientists and science enthusiasts welcome.

Are Digital Sequence Information important for #biodiversity? Yes, they are! Here’s why: #opendsi
Genomic data is key for #biodiversity research 🌿🐝 @guyrcochrane & colleagues analysed usage patterns in @ENASequence to see to what extent different countries use and share genomic data. They developed a handy dashboard that anyone can explore https://t.co/vCvkBMhOXk

Not surprising that anti-vax pseudo-science is published in @MDPIOpenAccess journals. Their business model gives up control of the journals, with Editorial Boards made up of >1k editors & hundreds of loosely controlled Special Issues. Things like these are bound to happen.
The latest article that is promoted by anti-vaxxers and corona sceptics is published by @MDPIOpenAccess, where someone must have fucked up really bad >>

Many scientists are puzzled by @MDPIOpenAccess: is it predatory or not? In a data-driven post I argue it is something different: aggressive rent extraction. MDPI strategy is innovative & successful, but unsustainable and ultimately bad for science. https://t.co/kSyXOBxajH
