We equip local communities to embrace men and women as they return from prison.

This is the secret of my career and the founding of @undergroundmins: I connected with those I met in jail chaplaincy, as my loneliness met theirs. My despair and theirs became something different: wildly honest, tender, hilarious, holy. Now science sees: relationships heal.
NEW: Today, I released a Surgeon General's Advisory on the epidemic of loneliness and isolation facing our country, the destructive impacts it has on our collective health, and the extraordinary healing power of our relationships. https://t.co/P9RnZkLr6G

This is what undergirds our One Parish One Prisoner reentry movement involving local congregations everywhere: “we imagine a world without prisons and then we try to create that world.”

“We imagine a world without prisons and then we try to create that world.” Father Greg Boyle, founder of @HomeboyIndustries Last night Greg, Laura Miera, Christy, and Jeanette talked at Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and it was so good. Glad to be there. @practofthepres /1

Modeling these relationships of trust and embrace expose the lie of the criminal legal system. This is what we seek to multiply, starting with prison letters then Reentry partnerships together.
In 1971, as part of a prisoner trustee program, then Governor of Georgia Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter hired Mary Prince to be their daughter’s nanny after she’d been convicted of manslaughter.

One Parish One Prisoner from @undergroundmins is an amazing opportunity for churches to participate in resurrection work.
One Parish One Prisoner ministry connects churches with incarcerated friends in Washington state. Teri McDowell Ott interviews church members about their experience of faithful connections with incarcerated persons. https://t.co/CkbF9uCUf2

Excited to share my cover story for the @presoutlook this month—about our work in WA mobilizing churches to practice a resurrection ethic through prison Reentry relationships. https://t.co/Q8wfNG4L1y.

We are constantly inspired by the men and women we get to work with who are leaving prison—and leaving behind their old violence, forsaking their guns, asking for help to learn a new way. The formerly incarcerated are way out in front. They can lead us into the future.

2.2 million people – parents, children, siblings, friends – are locked up. Lisa Guenther describes the “social death” of incarceration. So Good Friday and Holy Saturday are every day in America. The tombs are full. We need a resurrection movement:

I wrote a feature piece for @presoutlook on Easter, the Abolition of Hell, and how we can practice that Resurrection everywhere via prison Reentry work. Right on time for the heart of Holy Week:

Totally gonna use this in our One Parish One Prisoner Kickoff Orientation. This sums up the entire thing. Half our work is helping disarm community folks from the pressure of the left column, with permission to relax into the right—in relationship with their releasing friend.
