’s biggest fan. Balancing a kid & a newsroom with only occasional grace. (she/her)
Suddenly, today, I panicked about life inching back toward “normal.”
I don’t want to travel endlessly for work. I don’t want my weekends to be over-committed with activities. I don’t want to miss bedtime with my kid. I don’t want to wear blazers — or, hell, even shoes.
This year has been heartbreaking, depressing, paralyzing — in almost every way.
But some things about it have also been liberating, and I have to figure out how to cling to those things in a vaccinated future — even when others expect me not to.
Over the last year, our kids have endured catastrophe after catastrophe with a level of grace, patience and resilience most of their grown-ups can rarely muster. I’m so proud of them — and worried for them.
Several minutes ago,
@ProjectLincoln
posted a series of screenshots of private Twitter DMs showing reporting by one of our journalists — not long after she sent
@ProjectLincoln
a series of questions to respond to for a story.
What we’re enduring in Texas is catastrophic — and the distribution of basic, factual, timely information from people and agencies in positions of power has been inadequate and incompetent *at best.*
Our pediatrician’s office in Austin — a big, robust facility — just sent out an email saying they’re so overwhelmed with COVID and weird summer cases of RSV that they’re asking parents to *stop calling* with non-urgent medical questions and refer to a series of handouts instead.

🧵: Discrimination against moms is an "open secret" in many workplaces.
Workers are still being laid off while on leave, pushed out of jobs or subjected to comments like, “You probably have your hands full at home."
There is little legal recourse.
At bedtime my 7-yr-old begged me to promise she wouldn’t have nightmares about guns tonight.
I promised — and then whispered “puppies” and “cupcakes” and “bikes” in her ear until she fell asleep.
It was a lie. Every day is another nightmare we are too selfish to solve.

In a year of awful, one big blessing:
I was on track to spend so much of 2020 on the road, away from my kid, fundraising & speaking & conferencing. It was a treadmill — one I had to be forced off of to see how much she needs me here.
There’s no going back, & I’m good w/ that.
We just drove a grueling 19 hours straight from Austin to Palm Springs with a 4-year-old — the only thing we stopped for was gas, which my husband pumped double-masked — and let me tell you, the moment you pass out of an urban core mask-wearing ceases to exist.

What if there were a news platform that rewrote the national narrative for women?
And the night I first thought:
Holy shit we need a news platform that rewrites the national narrative for women.

I would love to know the dollars spent trying to save 700 desperate and drowning migrants off the coast of Greece vs. the dollars spent trying to save 5 deep sea tourists desperate to see the Titanic.
So many extraordinary journalists across so many different newsrooms got laid off this week and it’s just… devastating. We have got to keep rethinking how we build news orgs, how we pay for this work, and how we make it equitable + sustainable. These losses are staggering.
In the Trump White House, women earned 69 cents for every $1 a man earned.
In the Biden White House, women earn 99 cents for every $1 earned by men.
That's the narrowest wage gap since the country started tracking it in 1995.
